Cracked Windshield

Not happy today. I moved the car outside in the sun and noticed a 4" crack in the glass that starts from the bottom middle edge. I have no idea what caused it - it was not from driving, no impacts.

Web search came up with several videos of pros repairing similar cracks. One product "crack eraser" popped up several times while searching. Anybody have any advise. Can it be repaired?

Were little spacers used when urethaning the glass in?
Hard contact to the fiberglass flange may have done that. Always space it off, then use the urethane to take up the void between.

Sorry this happened Mike!

Damn it! :shout:

I would just call a local glass guy. They should be equipped to handle it.

Double dog dammit - yea, I'll call a local mobile glass service. I don't want to drive it and have the crack continue on. I'm wondering if it's stress/body movement related - it's not from driving... so I don't know. 3M windo-weld I believe was used for the install.

Jack, I don't know. I didn't install the windscreen.

Bummer, perhaps the installer owes you a windscreen.

The windshield been installed/in place since December. I'll see if a glass shop can do their magic. I will get a price over the phone 1st so they don't show up, see the car & then dollar signs.

I think they can stop the crack from going any farther BUT.............Not fix the damage already done. Looks like you'll need to call Fran.

I went with the lexan windscreen. saved 15 pounds and non need to worry about cracks. you do have to be a bit careful about scratches during install. Also half the cost of the glass.

Yeah what Jack said.
The crack is likely a result of contact stress. You could fix the crack but it just might happen again if it is not floated properly. I would say have a look at that area and have them drill and fix the crack; but in my opinion I would say you are fighting a loosing battle and soon or later it will happen again.

I think Joe may be right.

You can spend a little now and continue to chase to problem over and over. But if you realy want to fix the problem, your best bet may be to call Fran and order a replacement. (Or find out where Cam sourced his Lexan version).

Can that be ordered through RCR as well?

Good luck.

Mike

Yep ...in stock

I am constantly amazed by you and the company that you've built. You've truly made RCR a one stop shop for people interested in this craft.

The only thing that I've noticed that you don't make available (yet) for the SLC are tube headers. (I'm really surprised that Kooks hasn't developed a header system for the SLC).

You even provide buyers with transaxle sourcing when needed. You just don't see that anywhere else! (At least not that I'm aware of).

Kudo's to you and everyone there at RCR.

(Sorry Mike, I don't mean to hijack your thread).

Thanks Mike....I will get you on board one day...

I am a real fan of using well engineered OEM factory parts where possible...such as the LS7 exhaust manifolds....they flow more than enough to be used on the ZR1/LS9 with 638hp.

They are double skinned stainless and are a very neat package...only down side is the funky flange to connect to the tailpipe but we have those available in stock too...

They are inexpensive and readily available...so to me building a kit package that demands or requires headers is an extra cost to the customer that is not needed...

Mike,

Many months ago I had conversations with Shane to have Kooks develop a set for the SLC. Unfortunately, at that time it was going to be cost prohibitive and the project was abandoned.

Yep. That's where I was headed, but was trying to be careful with comparisons. Kooks required a minimum number of orders for them to develope and manufacture specific to a type of car. It appears to be the one thing that is not available for SLC Builders.

Agreed. By the way, I am on board... I just have over 100k in my current build and I'm going to see it through, and drive it a bit. Then I have little doubt that you and I will be in "purchasing mode".

I agree with you that the LS7 manifolds make a lot of sense, at much less expense. I've been following Grant's & Bill Phillips' builds with huge interest. When as I saw that they both used the LS7 manifolds, it got me thinking. I'm tying as hard as I can to synch up with Bill, and drive up to his house to see his build and get my first actual look at and SLC. I really like what I've seen on the forum.

(Sharkey: Sorry to misdirect your post). I got off on a tangent at your expense... :lipsrsealed:

Guys, there are a couple of folks posting on this thread that need to comply with Rule #2 of the forum. If you don't know what that rule is please go find it. I'll check back on the thread in a couple of days, those that don't comply will have the accounts locked/deleted/banned/closed.

Thanks,
Ron

I think there are too many variables for the SLC ...from transaxle options to engine choices....

We do have a lot of LS based builders but the transaxle/axle position is very different from G50's to Ricardo and other units being used...so packaging becomes an issue....we also have two tail options which dont support the same exit locations for the tailpipes....

Shane and I already tried to work through this with Kooks but it was a no go , as mentioned....we had a set of GTM headers here and we marked up all the changes that needed to be made...

The GTM is far more of a one drivetrain build too, with no factory body options changes...so its much easier to attempt a one size ifts all package

Wow that is a great looking exhaust built for the Factory Five™ GTM™ super car. I really think who ever built that system did a great job, if you had not mentioned it I would have never know about the manufacturer of the product, WHO did you say it was again?????
While I still have not decided when I am going to build a SLC™ built by Super Light Cars™ I am still piecing together parts and ideas to help aid my build for when I do it will certainly ease my construction process. You guys have done so much leg work and shared so many great ideas on here, be it about -> how to, or what to use.

OH well in the in-term I still have my German made 911™ Porsche™ to dream about, I just put on a new set of Yokohama™ AD08™ tires and I am itching to get out and try them, Stupid snow. I find new tires so sexy they give me a boner, just like the one you get when you take to much Viagra™. It is a shame they wear out and start looking old as soon you you start driving on them. OH well I am sure my friend Ivan at Tire Rack™ will hook me up with another set when I need them. Tire Rack™ actually supplies many of the tires I sell to my good friends who support my race shop ________ <-- no name mentioned as it is a company I am directly affiliated with that is not a paid advertiser on here.

I sure wish the snow would melt as I am itching to drive my Porsche™ or ride my R1™ sport bike. In fact I just put on a brand new set of Michelin™ Pilot Powers™ on my Yamaha™. Funny thing is several months ago when I parked my airplane for the winter I also put a new set of Goodyear® Flight Custom III® tires.

I love the little hairy nibs of rubber that project from the surface of a new tire. when I burn those things off I kinda get a little sad.

Well folks I am getting a little hungry so I think I will go eat some Rice A Roni® and maybe I will drink a Snapple® , Factoid --> did you know that Snapple® is not actually a brand of its own as it is a product made and packaged by the good fellows at Coka Cola™.
