Columbus Ohio RCR40

Finally (mostly) done with the fuel system. It was a ton of work to get it how we wanted. The regulator is mounted out of the way of a cardboard box that will hopefully soon be replaced by a coolant expansion tank. Still waiting on a few fitting to finish of the high pressure loop through the fuel rails.

First up was mounting the surge tank, and capping off a portion of the large whole here in the frame to accommodate it. An additional panel was made to cap off the rest of the space to hide the mess of fuel lines runing through the selector valve.

Here is a view of the inside. The selector valve is mounted here along with the low pressure 100 micron fuel filter, and the passenger side tank transfer pump. The drivers side transfer pump is tucked back in the frame on the drivers side.

The surge tank supplies the main high pressure fuel pump which runs through a 10 micron filter. The pressure regulator is after the fuel rails and will eventually accommodate a fuel pressure sensor.

Next up is to mount a plum in an expansion tank, make a few more short lines for the high pressure fuel loop, and then I think it's time to work on the interior more and mount the dash / steering wheel.
 
The expansion tank is in, and I think I picked out a overflow/recovery tank that fits just behind the fuel swirl pot. The line to the recover tank isn't mounted yet.

The expansion tank is plumbed into the steam ports at all four corners of the LS "steam ports" and then the bottom of the tank will soon feed into the line just upstream of the water pump. I am really happy with the tank I found, it fits in this location by only a hair when the rear body clip is closed. Fits like it was custom made for the area. I hope the -4AN line leading from the steam ports is enough to efficiently purge air from the system... I am slightly worried the line is not big enough... we will see.

I made a final diagram for the cooling circuit for future reference.

The dash is also roughly in along with the steering shafts. It felt great to sit in the car with these parts in... heads up to RCR kit builders, I had to order an extra 18" of double D shaft to make the steering linkage work how I wanted. I still need to trim back the female double D shaft.

I did the same with my dd shaft. I still may make some changes. I'm thinking about cutting that bottom tray and making a bracket to change the angle of the wheel. Thats probably one of the upgrades to do once the car is road ready if I decide to do it. Looking good Nick!

I also cut a hole in the tray to change the angle but to also get more room for my feet between the pedals and shaft.

I did the same as well, and repositioned the heim location as well. The steering wheel is squarely in front of the driver's seat in my car, which is exactly where and how it belongs.

I may end up cutting a hole as well. Still thinking it over....
 
We went to mount the pedals and decided last minute to just take the time now to cut a slot in the tray.... the pedals and my feet fit SO much better, especially with the pedal slider lifting up the whole pedal assy. It was worth the time. I just made a quick offset bracket then to bolt the heim joint. It's carefully positioned to keep the steering wheel right in front of the driver. It's really exciting having the steering completely installed!

The column set up is much better brought up into the tray. How is the angle of the steering wheel? I was thinking another swivel dd joint might be needed. I have the slider as well but did not like the pedals sitting up higher in the car, I decided not to use the slider. I have small feet! LOL

The steering wheel angle is perfect in my opinion. I carefully adjusted it for what felt like hours before finally drilling and bolting it in lol.
I was worried about the pedal height as well, but I realized I plan to install a lot in insulation any ways, in addition to carpet. I think I'll leave the slider mount exposed so it won't feel like the pedals are lifted up quite as high.

I am aware of the Marchal 651 lenses and the Ford Capri mk1/Ford Escort mk1 lenses that were originally used, but to be honest I keep seeing other lenses that I like more but can't score a part/model number.

I am hunting for the small fog light lenses shown below.

Search for Lucas L488 lamps. I got my pair off of Ebay.

They might be these Wagner sealed beam multi purpose units.

above is an amazon link. Canton racing makes one very similar but its much more expensive. I've also seen Moroso make an identical one again for a lot more money.

Thanks for the info, but it seems that is for the amber turn signal lamp. Sorry I should have been more specific I am looking for the clear rectangular fog light lens.
Sorry I should have also read it a little closer. For some reason the space above my already positioned turn signals was smaller than I hoped and found this set of glass lensed fog lights that look like they will work perfectly for me off Amazon.

These might be the lights you are looking for on Amazon 5"x 1.75" part # 4-FL-0660-SW-3 for $45pr also on Ebay $35pr they are available with yellow lenses as well.

That looks exactly like the Moroso one I bought for half the price :rolleyes:

Looks like they just stamped their logo on it.
 
There was one final coolant line that needed built that connects the bottom of the expansion tank to the return coolant tube. The coolant tube hookup point is just upstream from the water pump. To connect the line to the coolant tube the easiest thing I could think of what to simply weld in an extra bung for an AN line. I found a sweet stainless steel -6AN bung online that worked great, I just had to dish the bottom of the fitting to match the radius of the tube and drill a hole slightly smaller than the bung. I am happy with how it turned out. Don't worry, I am under no delusions that these are pretty welds. They are ugly, but ya gotta learn somehow...

We finished mounting the radiator fans which is exciting. We mounted them using a fan shroud we built with some scrap aluminum sheeting we had in inventory.

There isn't room to offset the fan shroud due to the front nostril panel, so there isn't room to bolt the fans simply through the shroud using the convenient holes in the fans themselves. Instead we decided to bolt them using captive nuts in the channels on the top and bottom of the fans. We found that 1/4" bolts fit great just slightly shaving down two sides.

I welded tabs onto the top of the radiator to bolt the top of the shroud, and then the bottom of the shroud can simply bolt through rivnuts in the empty space on the bottom of the radiator.

Really happy with the finished product. Some buffing and powder coat will clean it up nicely as well.
