Rear vision is not a concern......you are always ahead of everybody else! My experience with driving P1116 on the track and street confirms Bob Putnam's remark. I would install electric adjustible mirrors off something. On the 40 I drove, everytime you parked someone would knock the mirrors out of place when they leaned over to look into the car. A real pain to readjust as it was a two person job. There is almost no real vision out the "gun slit" rear window. You only get a "sense" that something is behind you. And backing up usually involes openging the door and leaning out. I saw John Wyer himself take the rear flare off one of the Gulf cars in 1968 at the Glen 6 hour event. He was backing into the old Kendall Tech Center (now a maintainence building) and he missed buy a couple of inches. Very embarrasing to him but a hoot to watch. I wanted to install to insatll the power mirros off a mid 80's Escort on the 40 but the owner did not. Painted to match the looked good and would have worked quite well.

I got some mirrors off of an 85RX7 for my car, they look good and are electric too. Rear vision still sucks.

Hi all

At last years UK Kit Car Show one Gt40 had a CCTV system and small screen in the car.

I do car audio/video for a living and I sell a rear view mirror that the right portion is a video screen to attach a video camera to it.

Don't have the 'bible" Ronnie Spains book next to me but one original car, the "Eton Motor" car had a Sony mini TV installed at FAV!

I drive my car on a semi-daily basis and feel pretty comfortable. I placed the rear-view mirror on the dash so I look up over the tail as I look back. I use the original style chrome bullet mirrors. The bottom line is vision is not good (except front) out of a GT40. One has to pay utter attention with frequently full head turns to look out back. My brother taught me the best way to wreck your car is to watch people watch your car.

having driven a wide bodied speedster as my daily driver for many years I find the rearward vision in the gt40 about the same.the vision directly back is good but the rear guards obscure a fair bit of the side mirror vision . I find the real danger is other cars sitting in the blind spot having a look. Many of the original cars mounted their centre mirror a fair way towards the passenger compartment.this probably helped with this blind spot.1040 at lemans had this in 1966,look in Allens book the legend lives on for photos of position

I like the rear camera approach is it possible to get one lense to give a panoramic view of the back. Small screen or the rear view mirror would be a cool addition. Wayne what is the cost of the camera and mirror setup?

Gordon; I NEED rear vision in Atlanta traffic. I want to DRIVE this car. Have had too many garage queens. Satchel Page said" Don't look back. Somethin might be catching up to you" cb

Wayne,
This sounds like what I was looking for. I never worried about seeing out back because I knew I'd have a camera, but this sounds like the trick for me. Sign me up for one.

At Roaring Forties we have been working on a remote control electric rear view mirror. It will be the same as the mirror we currently use ( see web site for photographs ) which is an aluminium casting. I chose this type of mirror housing so that brackets for exactly this could be welded into them. It was requested by John Schnider who frequents this forum and it should be finished in a month or so. As a side , our wiring looms are already fitted for electric mirrors.
The RX7 mirrors do work well as one of my customers has already fitted them and I have driven the car. They are large and in my opinion too large.
Best wishes,

Robert

I too use my GTD in traffic and drive it to all our competition events in the UK. If you intend to take it on a race track rear vision is of paramount importance. I've tried a number of motorcycle and car side mirrors and I have settled for oversize convex bullet mirrors mounted on both. front wings. The convex lenses give a wide enough field of view for road or track and look right on the car. I am only aware of one supplier who does them, Europa Specialist Spares here in England. They differ from normal bullet mirrors in having 120mm (4 3/4")diameter lenses. They cost £19.00 each (about $30.00) and are part no. COBMXLC.
Europa are at www.europaspares.com and can be e-mailed at [email protected]. You can see what they look like on my car by looking back to Paul Thompson's posting of 26th December " A few GTD pictures"

It just occured to me that the reason my vision out the rear slit and window is good is that roaring forties use a glass rear instead of perspex\lexan. it's that 3/4 view out the back that is the problem area. Could a camera cover these two areas? regards

Wayne Robert Logan went to the trouble of a glass rear window over the motor .It is far better for looks and vision and does not discolour or distort. Also it is very easy to keep clean as the injectors do spit a little over time .Regards
