Air filter or no air filter? For utmost performance and for a short time: no filters. "short" depends on ambient conditions and luck. For longevity and slightly lower performance: filters. ``slightly" depends on the type of filtration. I clean my filters (K&N, ITG) typically once a year - and usually I am glad I did use them. I was told by a guy who did prolonged test bed runs (on E-Type Jaguar engines) that power degradation due to lack of filtration can be observed as early as after one hour.

The type of piston rings makes a difference. Without an air filter, chrome rings last longer but take longer to get seated in the bore when new. Softer , moly-filled rings seat quicker but, as they are softer, wear quickly in the presence of airborn dust & grit. Dirt track cars almost always use chrome rings.

I use BBR filters on my Lola. Just had it on a dyno and tried both with and without, and they sapped about 8 HP.

Not quite, Hot Rod Magazine did a test on air filtering.
Paper elements are best, only robs a few bhp.
Second comes K&N
Foam resticts a lot and mesh even more.

Habe bei meiner lola mich auch für einen k&n filter entschieden hatte vorher tee siebe verbaut leider musste ich die grundplatte auseinanderschneiden das war bei mit 3 mm zu lang aber dann hat es genau gepasst sieht gut funktioniert und ist leise
