muffler size

I am trying to calculate the length of the muffler I can use. One of the Burns mufflers is about 17 inches long. Is this about the right size guys are using? Thanks.

My Superformance GT40 mufflers are 23" long overall, the body is 4" in diameter and 16" long. The inlet is 2" long and the outlet 5" long.

Thanks Alan, this is helpfull. I am having some mufflers custom made and I was not sure how long to make them. Thanks again I appreciate your time. Jim Fletcher

FWIW here's a picture. The stainless billet tips are wraped in protective tape.

Hi Jim,

as Frank stated, it's all about volume. I had my silencers custom built (stainless steel with a three chamber internal design). The overall length is 18”, and a 6.5 x 8.5” race-track cross-section. The overall length is dictated by the position of the collectors. I’d used commercially available 4-1 collectors, which were not that compact in overall length and consequently limited the maximum silencer I could achieve.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>
Hope this helps,<o:p></o:p>
