New Zealand legalises gay marriage.

Larry L, appparently no one cares about the meaning of words anymore. As Prof. S.I. Hayikawa (spelling?) tried to tell us years ago - change the meaning of the language and you change the culture.

Sorry Larry but I thought Mr. Williamson's speech made some very good points.

From the 1913 edition of the 1900 International, Webster's Unabridged Dictonary

Gay

Excited with merriment; manifesting sportiveness or delight; inspiring delight; livery; merry

Exactly my point, isn't it. No matter how forcefully one might insist it's the case, calling a skunk cabbage a rose doesn't change the fact it ISN'T.

Depends on your dictionary Larry:

Collins British dictionary:

marriage (ˈmærɪdʒ )

Definitions
noun

1. the state or relationship of living together in a legal partnership.
2. the legal union or contract made by two people to live together
(as modifier) ⇒ marriage licence, marriage certificate
3.the religious or legal ceremony formalizing this union; wedding
a close or intimate union, relationship, etc ⇒ a marriage of ideas.
4. (in certain card games, such as bezique, pinochle) the king and queen of the same suit.

Look at any t-r-a-d-i-t-i-o-n-a-l dictionary published over the last several hundred years, Brian - not one of these 'made-for-p.c.-radicals', 'see-how-we've-toed-the-new-lib-reality', 'revisionist', 'made-to-provide-bogas-legitimacy-to-lib-causes' frauds that libs have rushed into print over the past few years.

Bud,

I think that cultures and meanings constantly change and evolve. Just over the last few decades we have seen huge change. Just a few words with new meanings:

Cultures will always change and evolve. I'm afraid it couldn't be stopped even if we wanted to. I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm also certain progress is almost always a good thing.
