Does anyone have a list of differences between the Road and Race versions of the MKI. I see an Ash Tray on the forward console and mention of a clock on the dash, but looking thru the registry, no mention of what the various changes were

Anyone?

There were several differences twixt the two cars.
Here are a few changes on the road version :

Usually Armstrong shock absorbers with lower rated springs instead of Koni race.
5-way traffic indicator / flasher switch fitted to dash
Vinyl upholstery (leather dash in some cars)
Carpets to floor and bulkhead
Single SW fuel Pump
Autolite carburettors and manifold
Detuned HiPo engine
Road ratio transmission
Door locks
Interior light
Recessed and covered fuse box in dash
Smiths heater and plenum
Additional weatherproofing panelling to front scuttle
Brake lever changed out
Spare tyre and fittings
Some cars fitted with AC

Does anyone have any information on the gear shift linkage used on the right hand drive Mk III cars? I am assuming it was a rod shift with u-joints similar to the Pantera but on the other side of the car out back? Any pictures would be very helpful. thanks

Hi Lee

It's my understanding that within the various iterations of GT40 about thirty Mk1s were built as "road cars" to be sold to the public as part of the GT homologation requirements in order to race the car in the "GT" class. These road cars were all RHD, more trimmed out than the race cars and slightly detuned.

Some of these cars. in private hands, were upgraded to full race specifications.

The MkIII was built to what we know think of as a "globally federalized" specs. These GT40s had unique many features including flat floors, bumpers, raised headlights, extended rear clip, rerouted coolant pipes to the sills rather than central tunnel and some were built as left hand drive cars.

Cheers
Ian

Hey guys,
If you can get back on track, this thread is about the Mark I cars, which offered two versions: Race Coupe and Road Coupe

Like Ian pointed out, the Mark III is a totally different animal.

Road Cars Tyre Choice

Dunlop Front - 5.5 X 15 - Rears 7.25 X 15 - Oh Yes

Goodyear Front - 5.5 X 15 - Rears 7.00 X 15 - Oh Yes

There's an original photo of GT40 Road Car around after it crashed during a race with these tyres clearly fitted - probably why it's crashed.

Here's the photo which appears to show a road car used for racing probably/possibly on the original "road tyres".

Turning Circle - 37 Feet

The "Road Car" also had an engine bay illuminating light.

Going by the shape of the nostrils, the vents at the rear of the front clip, and the ducting in the B-pillar, I believe the photo posted above is of a very early prototype.
