Turkey tray

Made up a turkey tray. Although my car is intended to be a road car I made the Turkey tray as authentic as possible.

Therefore rather than doing all the cutouts and mounting holes precisely I cut them out roughly in the right place as though it had been thrown together at the side of the track.

I also put in plenty of adjustment on the mounting holes, just in case it ever needs to be swapped to another car. Some may view this as me being incapable of drilling holes in the right places but this is not true, honest.

Final photo shows my highly technical patented IDA dust protectors.

How many builders get this degree of authenticity/patina into their car? Going well, Nick. But what is the nightmare with the dash?

Hi,

Yes it's not everyone that can reach the levels of botching that years of practice have given me the ability to.

The idea with the dash was to paint all of it satin black apart from the top, which I was going to get flocked. Every time I got to the point were I thought one last coat, and the paint would bubble or crack.

In all I spent 3 months about 20 cans of paint and primer, about 5 times stripping all the paint off to try again. Finally I got to a point were the dash was at a level of roughness I imagined a dash in an authentic 40 would look like.

I took it to the guy who was doing the flocking to be told he would not be able to get a neat enough line if he did just the top so would have to do the whole dash. So 3 months work for nothing and make it worse the flocking cost less than the money I wasted on the cans of paint, oh dear.

Picking up the dash tomorrow so will post pictures although it is a bit of a marmite moment, i.e. you will either love it or hate it. The jury is still out for me I'm moving from the really not sure towards the love it side.

just in case you have never heard of marmite YouTube - Marmite commercial - Paddington

Nick, place me on the "no thank you" Marmite list..IMO it tastes like the yeast sludge that it is! Perhaps if I had it as an infant, I might like it..

Nick,
Careful masking of the satin black should allow a clean line for the flocking. In the past I have made a shallow groove in an FRP part as a break line between paint and flocking as well. Never had a problem although once I did have the flocking adhesive
seep under a tape line and make a little mess. Pain to clean up! DIY flocking is not difficult to do.

You Flocker - So thats where my tennis socks went :)

Car's looking better by the day Nick - I think you have passed me now in build terms.

Cheers pal,

Graham.

So that was the problem with the flocking dash!

Dalton,

Hilarious pun, or at least that's what I thought when I used a similir one, my family didn't think so but I'm glad someone else does.

Brilliant idea would have used it but unfortunately the flocking has all been done. With you on the marmite. I find it ok as long as I just take the top of the jar of and just show it to the toast. My son plasters it on yuck!.

The dash is growing on me.

Thanks Graham, not sure about passing you it's one step forward 10 back, so near and yet so far, at the moment.

Regards

Nick

Nick,
You could always get the whole dash flocked? I was thinking along those lines rather than go for trimming. Plus I am led to believe that the flock will stop any glare on the screen.

Good work on the turkey tray. Hope you sort out the hoses you PM'd me about.

Visit to Southern GT

Some pics of various GT40, from m and the new SGT company car which is being threatened with a Gulf colour scheme although the V8 transplant may not go ahead as apparently the pickup is hairy enough as it is.

Car under the tarpaulin is being designed and built by SGT's Specialist Projects Department, and should be very interesting when finished. The last picture shows my new goodies now being closely guarded by Stan.

I purchased a brake pipe flaring tool at a very good price due to a broken wing nut. I knew I would use it one day never thought it would be 30 years later though.
