In my time in the Royal Air Force my function was to try and make sure the
Soviet navy and especially their submarines had rather more difficult voyages
than if they went everywhere unimpeded. I was sent on various detachments that included spending time on R.N. boats and ships which made me quickly realise that choosing the R.A.F. was the best option except maybe joining the Fleet Air Arm.
Anti Submarine Warfare (ASW) was a great place to be for a younger chap but the hours were hard as most boat crews (subs) are 24 hours a day and 365 a year. Fun while it lasted.
