Would the GT in GTLM trim beat any GT 40 at Daytona, Sebring, or Le Mans?

For a while, I have wondered why JWA had Mk I GT40s in the '68 and 69 LeMans events instead of IIs. My guess is that there were enough homologulated Mk I GT40s to enable entry into the Group 4 class, which permitted 5 liter engines during those years. Mk II GT40s were not sold in the market...
