Just remember that the Renault UN1 gearboxes are said to be far stronger than those weaker C35 (but the citroen is said to shift better). The UN1 is still inexpensive, and it could be a better starting point whatever engine you're gonna put in your car.

The other solution could be inverting the gearbox, this should lower the input shaft quite a bit, thus the motor (which then should be put level). I've seen that done on a GTD, the owner had to modify the motor mounts and change the oil pan (He told me that it lowered the engine about 15cm. He...
