Roaring Forties #36 Joe's Completion Log

Here are the latches in all their glory. I still have to fab up some brackets to catch the pins, but that can wait until after paint. They're not quite perfectly flush - probably 1/64" or maybe 1/32" below the surface of the rear clip, but a quick chamfer on the edges with a small sanding block...

Roaring Forties #36 Joe's Completion Log

I spent the better part of two weekends with my brother last summer tweaking the fitment of the spyder and front clip, but nothing really picture-worthy. The mental Performance hinges changed the geometry of the front and rear clip mounting, so a lot of unsung work was done to get it right. More...

Roaring Forties #36 Joe's Completion Log

I've been making some progress on the body work lately. I'd like to get it primed and ready for paint in a couple months. The body work and paint represents that vast majority of remaining labor needed to get this car on the road, and I've found a local painter who gave me a quote of $600 to...

    Side Mirrors?

You guys comfortable with 5 (Pat) or 3 (Jack) little (8-32?) screws holding your mirrors on? I like the idea, but at speed, there are some pretty serious aerodynamic loads transferred from the mirror to the door frame.

Rubber moulding for rear clip to spyder

Thanks guys for your helpful suggestions and photos. I'll rummage through my box of RF-supplied mouldings tonight, and if the door seal stuff doesn't work, I'll place yet another order with McMaster Carr. I knew I had seen what I wanted there before, but searching for rubber moulding, rubber...

    GT40 side impact concerns

Valid concerns. A lot depends on what kind of chassis you are using. I believe a steel space-frame chassis provides substantially more side-impact protection to the tanks than certain monocoque designs where the exterior of the fuel tank essentially is part of the chassis. You could also use...

    The Best Replica!

About 10 years ago I went to Pompano airport where he kept his Mooney. There were a couple guys in the adjacent hangar building an S-51. It was gorgeous, their work was flawless, and they were really nice guys. My father and I had spent a lot of time hanging around with homebuilders. Anyway...

Rubber moulding for rear clip to spyder

Edit (???) - not 3/4 inch, only about 1/4 inch.

Rubber moulding for rear clip to spyder

OK, I've used the search function and looked at 38 pages of threads in this sub-forum but haven't found what I'm looking for. I'm finalizing body prep and tweaking my panel gaps starting with the rear clip and working forward. Without using any sort of moulding, the horizontal surface at the...

Flat plane crank in a SBF?

I'd love to see somebody do this. I would recommend anyone serious about it have a chat with the folks at Crower. I had a nice discussion with a very knowledgeable person there once about a flat-plane SBF, and he also suggested using a good rod/stroke ratio, e.g., a short stroke in a 4.125"...

    New Chassis

Very nice Kalun. What does it weigh? What structural benefit would be derived from adding one or two bars connecting the front and rear hoops in the middle of the spyder? Seems to me folks in the Pacific Northwest and Kiwis are descended from the same stock - this kind of...

ideal weight for steel tube space frame?

I bet 15-gauge (0.067") mild steel tubing would be plenty strong for the majority of chassis members with good welds and adequate triangulation.

    Opinions on restoration please

I think the patina reflects the history. They don't need to be covered in mud, but if the sheet metal is dinged because Enzo Ferrari kicked it, then it should stay dinged. IMHO.

    New ideas, new problems 2008

I submit that instead of advocating censorship we should be advocating personal responsibility. People with any reasonable measure of personal responsibility should not have any diffficulty distinguishing between video games and reality.

    Clip Latches

Coast Fabrication now sells the Aerocatch and there is a new model available, the Aerocatch 2, where the pin extends horizontally instead of vertically. Primarily intended for marine panel applications. They's be perfect for a GT40 if the distance between the center of the pin and the mounting...

    New ideas, new problems 2008

I agree that the Obama administration has more important things to do than revisit the poorly named Assault Weapons Ban. Cops on the street as well as statistics will tell you that gun violence is overwhelmingly committed by criminals and gang members associated with the drug trade rather than...
