    Andrew's GT Forte build.

I think almost all of us wish we had a larger garage! I wish I had room for a milling machine but there is no chance. Seems I'm not the only one using the bikes as shelves! My build has been slacking at the moment due to (amongst other things) sorting out one of the bikes to sell. :) I'm not...

    Andrew's GT Forte build.

I decided that with the relatively low cost of the 01E and the cost, lack of spares and expertise required to rebuild that with a relatively low powered engine it wasn't worth even opening it up as long as all the gears engaged. I just made sure I could engage all and turning the input shaft...

    Audi 016 v. Passat transaxle.....??

Which Passat? They had a variety of boxes in. 1) Not sure 2) Some are 3) Yes - depending on which one 4) Maybe / no / kind of 5) Maybe / no / kind of Some versions had the 01E same as the Audi A4/A6, Skoda Superb etc which is stronger than the 016 and has an LSD available, I think it was the...

Nicks Forte Scratch Build - to Stunning Mk1 GTD

The GT Forte chassis pack I believe is designed for the Corsa 'B' power assisted column but you can always use the non-power assisted column, to my mind you lose nothing by planning it to take the EPAS column even if you don't use it as you can always go that route later and it's much easier to...

    Andrew's GT Forte build.

Good luck! :) Have you planned what engine/gearbox combo you're going with?

    GT-Forte GTs40 build

I've been slacking somewhat recently, mostly because just about everyone in the family has been ill all year so far (nothing major just multiple colds and in my case tonsillitis). Just not felt like working in the garage so just been working on designing some bits. Anyway, a few bits done...

What is the extra lever at the front for?

    Brett that's my plan!

Hello from the West Midlands, UK!

I'm not unhappy with going for a DOHC v8 but it would have been far easier to have built round it rather than modify. My second bit of advice would be to decide early on which engine/gearbox combo to run and if not a 302 to buy them before you cut steel. Or build to fit the coyote which should...

Hello from the West Midlands, UK!

Hi Duncan. Good to see someone local, I'm also in the West Mids. I'd offer you a sit in mine but it's both setup totally for me (at 5'8"), isn't lowered and is about 1m in the air with no floor, no seats and no doors. :) My advice on the engine is that the path less travelled is much more...

    Rookie mistake and the concequences

I was thinking exactly the same! Maybe a catch somewhat like a bonnet so that if it's 'closed' it can't fly open even if unlatched and you have to press or do something to open it all the way.

Nicks Forte Scratch Build - to Stunning Mk1 GTD

Not sure of the rating on the 01X but you (and Brett) are right, it'll be fine, especially as the far lighter GT40 should give it a much easier time than the lardy Audi.

Nicks Forte Scratch Build - to Stunning Mk1 GTD

Are you sure that's an 01E? Looks like an 01X to me. 01X - From http://www.gt40s.com/forum/gt40-tech-powertrain-transaxles/24696-audi-01x-transmission.html 01E - (mine as picked up before cleaning)

Nicks Forte Scratch Build - to Stunning Mk1 GTD

Assuming the kit/plans are the same layout as my chassis the gearbox axle line is slap bang in the middle of the lower suspension mount point bracket (the reversed A-arms) onto the chassis. I've got a measurement somewhere as well, I'll see if I can dig it out.

Nicks Forte Scratch Build - to Stunning Mk1 GTD

Don't forget that the car itself should be at an angle, don't forget that if/when angling the engine! If your safe limit is 5 degrees then when assembling that's probably only 4.5 degrees! Do you have a copy of the plans for the GT Forte gearbox mounting brackets? They're meant for the 01E and...

Nicks Forte Scratch Build - to Stunning Mk1 GTD

It's not ideal but the alternatives cost a lot more. You can't mount the engine properly low but that requires dry sumping anyway. I wouldn't overly worry about the angles, the point someone made was that normal cars run the CV joints for 'life' but life there is 120k at 12k/year. Is it the end...

Tornado TS40 Build Belfast Northern Ireland

Yeah, I'd seen those before but they're out of stock at the moment. My intention was to fit a flush type locking cap now that would fit inside a 'proper' GT40 style one later. Out of interest, what size is the inside of the 'proper' caps (ie what size do I need my locking insert/cap to be...
