F1 is boring me to death!!!!

Although I can appreciate the need to get it right before committing to it, I'm disappointed that the decision on the "Centreline Downwash" rear wing idea has been deferred. Introducing a rule that concedes the effects of aerodynamics on competitor’s cars is a totally new concept and has the...

    Lawsuits on www.gt40s.com

Re: Lawsuits on www.gt40s.com It has always bothered me a little that these laws are primarily drafted by the same legal-eagles who a likely to get the biggest benefits from it. I wonder what other industries would be like if their employees had a free reign in righting up their own rules and...

    Peak Oil

Andrew, far from stopping work on your GT40, it'll be the best car to have. I watched the Mad Max movies so I know that the guy with the fastest Ford V8 wins

    Brake bleeding experience

Fred, The rule of thumb that I use for determining if there is air in the system is to pump the brake pedal quickly. If the pedal rises as I do this and then drops again after I stop, then I take the view that there is most likely air in the system. If not, then I take the view that there is...

Replicas of Grand Prix Cars - Pre war and 50s?

I have always believed that the original 1960s F1 Brabham would be a good candidate for a replica given that the engine was based on the Buick/Rover alloy V8 block... and would be relatively simple to reproduce. Or possibly the Lotus F1 car of the same era since I believe the Cosworth V8 (or at...

    Peak Oil

Earlier this week the science-news program Catalyst on the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) presented a very interesting story on Peak Oil. This was a term that I had never heard before, but apparently there is a debate raging on at the moment as to when our oil supplies are likely to...

Wheel Spacers - Good, Bad or Dangerous ?

[ QUOTE ] no different to having the extra thickness cast on the wheel offset in the first place [/ QUOTE ] John, You may be ultimately correct about it being safe if the studs are of a strong enough material, but there is a difference to just having a different offset where the holes...

    Roaring Forties # 61

Pete, you might be able to confirm (or otherwise) what I have been told. As I understand it, doing a quality repaint of a fibreglass bodied car is not as simple as a repaint of a metal bodied car. The divide between primer and body is not so distinct so removing the old stuff is generally a...

Wheel Spacers - Good, Bad or Dangerous ?

Spacers here in Victoria are illegal and would probably also void your insurance so just make sure that it’s OK there in NSW first. But if you are determined to get spacers, then the preferred option would be to get those that bolt to your hub via the standard studs, and then have their own...

    Roaring Forties # 61

The pics of the colour came out great Bill but I guess its one of those colours that looks best in real life. Andrew, the colour you chose is great too. One of the better yellows that I have seen, and I am saying that after having seen it in life too (at Allan's). Pictures just do some colours...

    Roaring Forties # 61

I'm a bit slow off the mark this week Bill. I only just caught sight of your thread. I know you have progressed significantly since you took these pics and since I can't seem to get enough of build pics keep'em coming. ... and I also second Allan's request... now how about some pics of that...

    Languishing project

May I share a personal experience. When I started building my car, I would look at a whole job, set a goal to finish it by a certain day and attempt to meet that goal. More often than not however, I felt daunted by the size of the job and would leave it for a day when I could dedicate myself...

What is the build and delivery time of your RF?

[ QUOTE ] I can ask as many questions as I like... I AM THE CUSTOMER. [/ QUOTE ] Oliver. As a self employed person, I think you probably know that this is not true (unless of course by "can" you mean that it’s not illegal). I think that common courtesy, if not common sense, says that your...

    Saw my first 40 today

I agree Jamie. As good as the GT40 looks in a picture, it does not come close to seeing one for real. I too had decided that I was going to own one some day having only ever seen a picture. But seeing one for real galvanised the wish and it soon became reality.

    Engine cutting out

Thank you all for your help, but I just got a phone call from Robert Logan from the other side of the world offering to put his best Motec man in Melbourne onto it (Ross Holder). I consider this a very generous offer since I built the car and engine myself and did not consider him under any...

    Engine cutting out

I’m experiencing some very strange problems with my engine at the moment and hoping someone could help me figure it out. The engine is basically a standard RF40 setup ie 5.0w engine with a Motec M800 and all electronic setup (with coil packs etc). The symptoms are… 1) The car will start and...

Any tricks for reducing exhaust note?

Just wondering if anyone knows of any simple tricks that I could use to temporarily reduce the sound of the exhaust while the car is being tuned in the garage? I live in a quiet residential area and feel reluctant to do any lengthy engine work in case I overstep the good will of my neigbours. A...
