    IMSA Fiero Race car

As I was building/restoring the car I did take lots of pics. Unfortunately ther were a few steps that wish I did take more of and did not realize this until times like now......Oh Well!! Moving along, I mocked up everything for test fit. This included brake, oil, trans cooler lines,electric...

    IMSA Fiero Race car

Funny you should mention that........... There was a reason I reworked the suspension over the winter. Last season was my second with the car on track (although the first full season) and was stupidly trying to really hammer the car wherever I went as I thought "it's gotta stick, this is so and...

    Non-syncromesh with helical teeth?

It's funny you bring up mufflers............... I wanted the lightest quiet mufflers I could find. So I found that Coast Fabrication( also makes Burns Stainless) make mufflers used on Daytona Prototypes. So, I figured that if the mufflers were good enough for them........... Well at $250 each I...

    IMSA Fiero Race car

Thank You for the compliments. It makes the seemingly endless hours and late nights worth it to know that others just "get it" (since my wife doesn't totally understand why I put myself through this madness)! The car weighs in with my weight and 5 gals fuel at 2150lbs.The motor puts down a...

    IMSA Fiero Race car

The uprights were designed by GM and cast/manufactured by Super Bell Axle Co. and actually have a GM part number cast into them!.They were designed to use a production S-10/full size front wheel drive hub/bearing units in order to keep the costs within reason. They were only manufactured for a...

    Non-syncromesh with helical teeth?

I'm not sure................It's the weirdest thing, in the car all I hear is the exhaust note (matter of fact, I think I will start to run with earplugs as my ears are ringing by the end of the day!), but on the in car video, the camera mic pics up some gear whine. But understand that there is...

Gear rod movement distance comparison table

The kit came complete: gears, dog rings/sliders and shift rails( the detents are closer together due to less distance from neutral to engaged). The quality of the kit was excellent as the replacement gears speced out at the exact same width as the stockers so there was no need to adjust any...

    IMSA Fiero Race car

With the suspension I continued to use mockup parts to help me with packaging. With the front swaybar arm, I used wood with a piece of aluminum attached to it so I could determine the angle it would need to be bent to in order to clear the A arm. I then orderd the blank straight arms, cut them to...

Gear rod movement distance comparison table

The reason the Porsche shift travel is so long compared is that they use a large brake band type of synchronizer, as opposed to a more modern Borg-Warner type. The Hewlands don't have any synco at all, just face dogs that have very little travel from disengaged to full engaged.

Gear rod movement distance comparison table

930 with Albins dog conversion is a tick over 1/4in. I was able to use a shifter designed for use with a Hewland by Taylor racing. Hewland Gearbox | Jerico Transmissions | Quaife Transmission | Tilton Clutch | Racing Driveline. If you have ever shifted the 930 (or should say, strong-armed)...

    IMSA Fiero Race car

Moving along to interior sheet metal, plumbing, shift linkage and headers. I laid out the shift linkage before the headers as I wanted to get the straightest run to the gearbox. I fabbed up the shifter as a copy of a formula car or Hewland style shifter, but one that gives more travel as the...

    IMSA Fiero Race car

So after I got her home and cleaned up it was time to see how the big V8 lump was going to slot into the place where a 4cyl used to be! At the same time I needed to correct the patches upon patches in the chassis and put the suspension pick up points back on the car in the right places. I was...

    IMSA Fiero Race car

When I got the car home it was plain to see that she led a HARD LIFE!!! The chassis was very bruised and battered. There was even galvanized fence post used in places as patch material!! The back half of the car was so bad in that no chassis pick up point was even side to side or symmetrical...

    IMSA Fiero Race car

I will be able to keep the pics and updates coming quickly as the car is finished and running!! First a bit of background... in 1984 Pontiac/GM wanted to promote the new Fiero line and decided to enter pro IMSA racing up against the like of Mazda and others. With a meager budget, John...

    IMSA Fiero Race car

Well, here I go!! I just had to get off the sideline and participate in sharing my project and not just looking at everyone else's. The car is done and running, but I will post the pics of the process taken to a racer that looked like this at the beginning, the second as I found it, and last as...

    Non-syncromesh with helical teeth?

You misunderstood me. Once I got everything sorted (shift linkage, fork adjustment/ retention, cooling system,etc..), I am really pleased at how it shifts.I have nothing but praise for Albins in the performance of their products and how I was treated/handled during the ordering process. The...

    Non-syncromesh with helical teeth?

Jack, I'm not really sure, but there were many GTP cars with big horsepower motors( V8 Chevies and turbo motors) that used the DGB (although some later on used the March designed case with the 2 piece final drive housing that was much stronger). Jack Ondrak has a Huffaker Fiero that now sports...
