James' GT-Forté scratch build GT40 MkI

Got most of the first coat of zinc primer on... Quite surprised how long it takes! File down weld splatter, wire wool clean, roughen up with sand paper, clean with white spirits, then paint. Just got sand, second primer coat, sand, first top coat, sand, second top coat. Turn over and repeat...

James' GT-Forté scratch build GT40 MkI

Hi Keith It's from a Toyota Celica. Eric from this site sent me some useful photos of the way he builds the mechanism for Audi boxes... There's a photo here.... Other Parts - A&E Automotive & Machining I need to work out the shifter end too, but hoping it shouldn't be too tricky to...

James' GT-Forté scratch build GT40 MkI

Ha, yep - doing everything at least twice means you get at least twice the fun :). I've got an Audi 01E box which has the control on the left hand side, so cable shifters down the center looks like the simplest solution. I'm planning to use the space to the right of the driver (where the gear...

James' GT-Forté scratch build GT40 MkI

Here you go Nick.... The handbrake is from an MGF and is pretty compact. It's got a switch on the other side for the brake light. I've also made a start on the gear stick. Need to wait until I've sorted out the steering wheel position before welding it in place to ensure there's no...

James' GT-Forté scratch build GT40 MkI

Had a little time away from GT40 training for a triathlon, but back on it now. Welded in the harness fixings so there're directly behind the harness holes in the seats...

    Leaky Wilwood Reservoirs

The Tilton 3-chamber looks great. Just wondered why it says "FOR RACING USE ONLY". If it's good enough for the track, you'd have thought it was good enough for the road. I'm thinking of going this route too given all the comments on leaks. Just want to make sure it'd be OK when it comes to...

Hi Paul. Yep, I picked up a few spare lights too *just in case* :)

    RHD headlamp units

Thanks for posting the link. He'd sold out when I tried, but he managed to get hold of some more :). There are 3 pairs left at the minute....

Welded in the mounting for the handbrake, and got some headlights. Looking forward to the day when I see them lit up :)

Really sorry to hear this news Steve. Thinking of you. James

    Battery location

If you put the battery in the front, you may be able to use the space saved in the back for a slightly longer fuel tank. Guess this wouldn't swing it either way, but may be something to think about...

James' GT-Forté scratch build GT40 MkI

Hi. It's designed to be built in the three horizontal sections and then the vertical / cross members added in, which I've done. If everything was tack welded first then all welded up, it'd be pretty difficult to get into all the places to do the welding, especially where several pieces meet each...

James' GT-Forté scratch build GT40 MkI

Thanks Mic. Although I can't take credit for the design of the chassis - I'm following the GT-Forté plans.

James' GT-Forté scratch build GT40 MkI

Hi Keith Yes, I've read Franks articles & associated discussions. I figured a GT40 is inherently less safe compared to a modern production car and if I was going to stop and think about all the 'what ifs' I wouldn't be building a 1960s race car...

James' GT-Forté scratch build GT40 MkI

Hi Nick - yep, nearly there. Just the windscreen roll bar & roof roll bars to go I think. I might add a couple more bits like handbrake and harness mounting points then it'll be time to paint it. Will probably just do an undercoat for now (to keep the rust off) in case I need to weld in any...

Main roll bar and supports in place. Starting to feel like a car now (well, a little anyway!)

Useful? - yep, just printed a couple of GT40s out for my children to colour in. Thanks!
