Parts Source List

Has anyone ever started a parts sourcing list for the SLC build. Wasn't sure if RCR build manual had a list but was considering starting one here on the forum as an Excel spreadsheet. As a potential future RCR build project owner, I have seen many builds here on this website and thought it would be helpful to have such a list.

There are so many variants in each build, that any list would necessarily be both incomplete for some, and too much for others.

Even for things that every car needs (e.g., a fuel delivery system), there are as many variations as there are cars. I doubt that anyone has done their fuel system exactly like another.

That's not to say that a list of potential parts for a given subsystem wouldn't be useful. For example, in the fuel delivery system vein, most everyone uses a low pressure pump, a high pressure pump, one or more filters, and a swirl pot as a minimum. My car has all that, plus a carbon recovery canister, a roll-over valve to stop leakage if the car is upside down, and a manual shutoff valve, along with a boatload (I think that is the term of art) of fittings and hose.

Will, good feedback. It seems as I have gone through this website the past months that I have seen many parts used on builds. Sourcing parts seems to be a big time consumer for the builds. Thought it would be helpful to have a parts list of what SL-C builders have already used. You may be right though that each build is unique but I plan to put a list together for some of the more generic parts for my future build.

Keep in mind that not everyone has the background or knowledge that many builders do. If options for various parts of the car were listed, then the builder could investigate those possibilities and determine which is best for their build. If it were not for this forum, I would have no earthly idea of all the necessary components needed. As a matter of fact, I sometimes feel like a idiot for not knowing what others take for granted. Possible subjects:

Fuel
Engine
Heat shield
Brakes
Coolant
Interior
Body
Electrical
etc.

I think it would be remarkable valuable.

I totally agree that every build is unique, but a source for all those unique parts would be extremely helpful for those building a car. I have even seen where an incomplete car is being sold and the fact that many parts have been sourced is a significant selling point for the buyer. I am sure that most would agree that building a second car would be much easier and more efficient than their first build. No small part of that would be due to ease of sourcing of parts for the second car. Anything that helps seems reasonable to me, but that's just my opinion.

I agree that each build is different, but I still think its helpful to share lists. Each builder can then mix and match the lists to fit their desires. These reference parts lists could be a big time saver for new builders.

In that spirit, here is my parts list. The major items are listed, but there are many other smaller things as well.

I too agree that no two builds are identical but there are more similarities than dissimilarities! A parts source list list a good starting point for the builder. From my perspective as a starting builder; every little bit helps. If the parts listed on the “Parts Source List” aren't the direction the builder intends to take his/her build....they can just ignore and go on.

I have two full time jobs: I build by day and source parts by night! IMO, this build would be almost impossible without the internet and a Source Parts List would just make life that much simpler!

I stared the SL-C Kudos/Shout Out Thread in hopes that experienced builders would chime in with feed back on suppliers fellow builders had positive experiences with. It pretty much turned out to be a mutual admiration page and never went in the direction I intended. Kirk, your idea definitely improves upon mine.

As to the point that any Source Parts List would incomplete....probably; but it would be a ”work in progress....just as the SL-C build seems to be.

I for one think a Source Parts List is an excellent idea and I hope suggestion does not fall upon deaf ears!

My 2 cent,

Jim (build #145)

Great idea. For new builders, try not to get too far ahead of the parts sourcing. It seems that we have a very creative bunch of folks that are finding some things that work better or are more suited to the build than what you may have already purchased. A list of common components would be very useful. I attempted to "get ahead" before the SL-C delivery and have a pile of expensive parts on the shelf because folks found a "better way". The parts list is getting really dialed in now though.

Very nice Michael! I'll gross reference with my list so there are no duplications and post.

Thanks guys, for sharing with the forum

Jack, I agree.

I shared just a couple columns of my parts list spreadsheet. One of the columns in my original list was "When to Buy". Some parts can be bought while waiting for your kit to arrive, and some can be bought later. For example, I wanted my drivetrain ready to drop in when the kit arrived. So I purchased the motor, G50 transaxle, headers, engine harness, modified the intake manifold, shortened the tail, clutch, pressure plate, clutch slave cylinder, etc. That allowed me to install my complete drivetrain within a week after the kit arrival.

For the other parts, I recommend you do your "window" shopping while waiting for the kit to arrive, but hold off on buying them. Researching and selecting the parts can take an enormous amount of time away from your build in the garage, so do it early and keep a selection list. Then just order those parts as you go, about 2 weeks before you need them. As you continue to read the forums and start your build, you get smarter and will likely change some of those selections along the way.

Would it be helpful to have that list in an Access database form so it could be sorted and viewed by vendor or part or size, etc? I did those a long time ago, and new information could be entered by members through an Access form and queried the same way. Designing the DB isn't simple, but it isn't rocket science either.

John,

That's a great idea, but how about a simpler approach in an Excel spreadsheet. It can still be sorted by column as you suggested.

Maybe include an "Area" column to organize the list into something like:
  • Engine/Intake/Exhaust
  • Fuel system
  • Cooling system
  • Electrical/Gauges
  • Brakes/Suspension/Steering
  • Transaxle
  • Wheels/Tires
  • Heat/AC
  • Interior/Seats
  • Body/Windows
  • Other

I mentioned Access because it's based on a form peridigm front-end to the actual DB, and you can design a a password protected entry form with filters to catch most errors, and contact buttons to send an email for forgotten passwords, etc.
The query form looks a lot like the advanced search page on this site. I never wrote Excel macros to do sorts and hide unwanted rows, but that may be a simpler approach if you can validate entries and limit who can make them. Might be s simple as making the file read-only, but I'm not well versed in Excel.

Since Access can import data From Excel, one approach might be to start with an Excel spreadsheet while the Access Db is being worked out. Then then import a few data fields into the DB and see which is easiest for everyone to use. The hard part is administering whatever approach is used, but I'm sure Ron has lots of spare time and wouldn't mind doing it, would you Ron? :juggle:
