Is the right to bear arms outdated.

To be fair, the head of the NRA is only referring to criminal background checks for gun sales at gun shows. He says nothing about "Universal Background Checks" in its broad definition posted by Jack.

Gun sales at gun shows is one thing. Being forced to do a background check when my Dad gives me one of his hunting rifles is ridiculous.

Why? Because parents never give weapons to children who shouldn't have weapons?

Jeff,

So we should have the federal govt regulate that too. Is there anything left? If I give a car to my high school kid and expect her to pay it off by doing projects around the house should my child pay sales tax on the car or should I have to give her a 1099?

Get real. At some point there has to be a limit to the invasion of the federal govt.

You're also assuming they can actually do a good job regulating such activities. The reality is there are precious few large scale regulatory things they do well.

The last three shooters.

I'm being extremely real. If you give your kid a car, you have to have insurance to pay for any damage they cause, and they have to take training classes and undergo a proficiency test before they can drive, and we also don't allow kids with certain types of mental health issues to own guns.

Just cause it's grandpappy handing down the family assault rifle doesn't mean the transfer should be treated any differently.

That's exactly what has been said. Keep the guns out of the hands of the mentally impaired.

What do you think would be a good number?

Zero is a good number.

The gun community has shown the total inability to keep guns from both criminals and crazy people. Additionally they have fought any attempt to try and keep them from criminals and crazy people.

UPDATED: 5 People Shot At 3 Different Gun Shows On Gun Appreciation Day

If the gun advocates behind this year’s inaugural Gun Appreciation Day had hoped to use the day’s festivities to build support for their anti-regulation platform, they are going to have to wait another year.
Emergency personnel had to be called to the scene of the Dixie Gun and Knife Show in Raleigh, North Carolina after a gun accidentally discharged and shot three people at the show’s safety check-in booth just after 1 pm. Both victims were transported to an area hospital, and the Raleigh Fire Department announced that the show would be closed for the rest of the day.

Paducah - A Kentucky man has been charged with manslaughter after he allegedly killed his girlfriend's 3-year-old son in an accidental shooting.

WBTV reports that 3-year-old Braydion Scott Matlock was shot and killed late Saturday afternoon at his family home on North 12th Street in Paducah. According to police, Matlock was shot by his mother's boyfriend, 21-year-old Nicholas D. Barbee of Paducah. Barbee, who allegedly confessed to accidentally shooting the boy, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter.
"The gun was bought to protect those children due to the area deteriorating where they lived," Lopez said. "He (Barbee) stepped up to the plate and took over."

Lopez described Braydion as "always smiling, always happy" and "the best child you would ever want to have and the best grandchild." She also said that Barbee was a great guy who was "hurting" and "sorry" about killing the boy.

Numerous children across the US have died in accidental shootings in recent weeks. Among the latest reported incidents:

On February 2, 13-year-old Paige McGinnis of Ovid Township, Michigan died after her 14-year-old brother accidentally shot her in the head with a shotgun.

On February 1, Tmorej Smith, 3, of Greenville, South Carolina killed himself with a pink handgun he found in his family home.

On January 23, 4-year-old Jamarcus Allen of Akron, Ohio was accidentally shot and killed while riding in a car with his father, who has been charged with manslaughter.

Your right Jim, the gun community does a terrible job in keeping guns from the mentally ill.

The car community does a terrible job in keeping drunk drivers from driving cars too.

Since when was it the gun owners responsibility to keep mentally impared people away from guns?

Jim, Why do Chicago and Washington DC, two of the strictest gun laws, have the highest death rates by guns?

Tom,

If car owners fought every attempt to stop drunk driving, then car owners would be responsible........................

When you fight every attempt to control who has access to guns, you become responsible........................

And under that logic, all appraisers are responsible for crashing the real estate market.

I do want to keep guns out of the hands of felons and the mentally impaired, your approach is all of the guns. That's not acceptable.

Are you for manditiory background checks for all gun sales?
Are you for a nationwide data base so folks who develop mental issues can be disarmed?
Are you for disarming all homes where anyone living there has developed mental issues?
Are you for all guns being registered with a fired bullit on file?

That doesn't do any thing about the illegal possesion by a felon now does it?

Marc, you forget that Mr. Craik doesn't care about that and doesn't care about prosecuting criminals. He believes that bad people are nor responsible for their actions and good people are responsible for bad people.

You are wrong!

Felons can now buy guns at gun shows without a background check.
Felons can now buy a gun from you without a background check.

Manditory background checks for ***ALL*** gun sales would help keep guns from felons.

You do want to keep guns from felons don't you?
