SVA is not the problem. Please do not cloud the issue.

DVLA is the issue for using secondhand/refurbished parts. There are one set of rules for building the vehicle and another for registering it.

What I meant was trying to get the car registered (shame what I wrote didn't match what I meant).

I can concur on the DVLA inspection and that they only like to see one recon unit to still qualify for a new registration.
Of course the engine trans could be described as the POWER Train and as such be one unit /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

In practice they do not care. When I went through this process on the caterham I had a "certificate of newness" from caterham stating it was built from all new components even thought he engine/transaxle was not sourced from them. As long as the manufacturer is happy to supply this certificate validating the components used in the manufacture of the kit are new then it should be a breeze.

All the same I was considering ordering a new transaxle from Audi to simplify sourcing.

 

Excuse my ignorance but in a previous post Mark said a EKN is the best as it came with an oil pump. Seemingly this would be for oil cooling and would necessitate a resevoir of some sort. Is this correct or have I got the wrong end of the stick? I can understand how oil cooling can add to longevity but this does not effect pure strength does it?

There is no external reservoir (well there isn't on my Audi with an 01E box which has a gearbox oil cooler...)

In sweden these audi 5 or six-speed gearboxes are common and unexpensive. The older type of 01e that have the cast iron center housing are much stronger than the newer with aluminium center. But the early six-speed before 1994 have a weaker 1st gear that will break if anyone makes drag race tests. Prices for the 01e 5 speed, code CEP, is aboat 500 euro and for the 01e six-speed, code ARX is aboat 600 to 1200euro. 1200 is for a rebuilt unit.

Gearbox ratios 6 -speed, code ARX: 1,89 1,32 0,87 0,73 0,56 Final gear 3,50
There is also another 01 gearbox that are extremely common, called 01p, a 2 piece housing is the biggest difference to the 01e 3-piece hiousing. They are all 5-speed and is mounted in audi 100 with 2,6 or 2,8 v6 engine. Prices for this gearbox code CDX is aboat 350 to 500 euro.

The length from bellhousing to the center of driveflange on all boxes seems to be 175mm and total lenght varies from 620mm (5sp) and 670mm (6sp).
If you are on a scrap yard and find a audi that you wan´t to identify the year box without getting dirty. Look in the car on the shift knob, the 01e 5 or six speed has the reverse at left/forward all others has the reverse at right/backwards, very simple if the box still are in the cars. The ratios that you post show only 4 gears and final drive for the 5 speed and 5 gears and final drive for the 6 speed.

My 5 and 6-speed 01e gear boxes both have 37/9 r/p (4.11)
It seems to me that most of these boxes have the same final drive, Rs2 and some other 4wd have 4.375 instead.
I am not shure aboat the 01p but it would probably be in the same range.

Hi Guys, Maybe someone out there knows, i have searched lots of Audi Sites can't find anything on these.
I have found a couple of Audi transaxels, one is in a 5cyl 80 and the other on a 5 cyl 90 they are both 1988-90 cars the gearboxes have thes numbers AKU 21127 AND AKT29057 they are both quattro, i can find nothing about them are they stronger than a 016 or more like a 093 seem to have lots of ribbing on he outside, the shifter is on the RHS of the box,and the diff access plate is on the LHS,looking from the front, also stumbled onto this site with lots of Audi transaxel info.http://www.dieselschrauber.de/audi_zuord.html it is in german, but is still usefull Regards GraemeS

According to Audi parts info both the AKT & AKU are 5 speed quattro boxes used in both the 80 & 90 as you say.
The bellhousing/diff casing is an 012 casting.

They are not as strong as the 01E.

I read your post from 06-12-05 on the 6 speed 01X transaxle & I am trying to learn as much as I can on it. I would like to use it in my Magnum GT. Do you have any more info on it and do you have a few web site in Sweden that I can work with. Hopefully some of them can handle english.
