I thought some of you might be interested in taking a look at this:

Brammo V12

They have a very interesting website that you might want to look around in if you haven't been there before.

I didn't see a price (may have been subconsciously afraid to look ;-). But, it looks remarkably like the transaxle that Max Crawford debuted in his prototype (P1 not DP) that Doran ran part of the season in 2001.

Since I started this thread in the powertrain area in error, here is more about the Xtrac 6012 gear box:

Click the image to see a listing of Xtrac gearboxes including other longitudinal transaxles, in addition to the 6012, which don't appear to be nearly as long as those found in Daytona Prototypes and might be worthy of consideration.

Here is a link to a much better version of the 6012 PDF than was posted previously.

Here is Xtrac's maketing blurb:

New '6012' Road Car Gearbox

Xtrac launched its ultra high specification 6 speed transverse transaxle transmission at the Autosport International Show held at the NEC in January.

The new gearbox represents an important commercial development for the company; building on our expertise in specialist race car transmissions the road-going '6012' variant extends Xtrac's business into low volume driveline projects for the mainstream automotive industry. Designed to meet the needs of vehicle manufacturers producing high performance vehicles, the transmission can handle an impressive 1,100 Nm (811 lbft) of torque.

The key benefit to makers of exclusive supercars requiring such transmissions is access to an affordable 'off-the-shelf' system, thereby avoiding the need for expensive upfront engineering development of a bespoke design.

I wonder what the distance is from bellhousing face to axle centers and input shaft to axle height compared to others such as the 016, 930, G50 etc.

and price difference also.

If you bought the engine direct from Ryan the price is $65,000, yes ....... sixty-five-thousand dollars. To some on this list that is not a bunch of money. I certainly do not fall into that category! I'm guessin' the tranny is near $20,000. Nice gearbox and engine no doubt.

Rob,

I think the trans is closer to 40k with all the required components to make it function....
The Xtrac in a Daytona Prototype or an IRL car is 40k plus options.....

I emailed Xtrac and Brammo about the gearbox several months ago. Xtrac were going to send me the CAD drawings and suggested that if as a small car manufacturer I were to order, say, 200, they would be very affordable. I replied to the effect that I was merely building a prototype at this stage. I received no further reply.

Brammo didn't reply either. I would have expected one-off purchases would be more his bag, but nothing.

Hmmm that transaxle. Anyone recognise it is sooo very similar to the McLaren F1? I do recall xtrac having a dabble in its development for the F1 (apart from FF)

The Mclaren F1 gearbox was a transverse unit made by Wiesman in California. Its a beautiful package

cheers

It is indeed. Looks much like the F1 box though. Perhaps just borrowed the idea from that? Oh and the original transverse 'box idea for the MaLaren F1 was thought up by Gordon Murray. The final layout was done by Weismanns in the USA. The first cases were cast in the UK, machined and assembled at Weismanns for testing. The first prototype work was also done by them, but the actual completion of design, development and production was done by Ferguson Formula Developments (FFD) in the UK.

Now if only a few 'cheepys' popped up on ebay .......

Does it work?
