- This is the kind of info our liberal friends from the Bay Area read.
Posted by Domtoni

Domtoni, once again it would be better for you to post things you actually know!

I consider myself a liberal, I have lived in the "Bay Area" for almost 60 years. I have never read "this kind of info" nor does anyone I know read "this kind of info" but then again you have never let facts get in the way of another mindless attack!

Kieth,
I sincerely sympathise with your personal predicament. Disabled is disabled. My own brother had a stroke and if he had not had a long-term disabilty policy in place from his former employer, he and his wife and son would be living with me. So I understand and approve. As for treating "the greatest generation" to scraps and abuse, our generation needs to grow a pair and fix this right now. You are right about the Asians as rising and some of that can be attributed to a family oriented foundation that treasures (at least puts up with) their elderly. Why has the West abandoned this basic decency? I fear it all started with my generation (Boomer) due to our own selfishness and hubris. It is lot less messy letting some government worker deal with the elderly than to confront our own mortality as it pertains to our parents. Who hasn't looked in the mirror to see their father's aged face staring back at them after they reach 50 years of age.It is scary! Somewhere along the way our generation took the easy way out and allowed the government to manage our personal affairs without consequences except for the taxman. The 'brilliant' socialists sold us a bill of goods that central planning committees could do a better job of educating our kids and taking care of our old folks. We loved that because now we were free to indulge our own fanatacies and addictions. Why not, they said. We only owe our lives to ourselves without regard to future responsibilities.
We have made a deal with the devil and now the bill is due. It's not too late to change but it is going to be painful.

Gary,

I have read that the real change in how society treats older folks started with the printing press and has greatly accelerated with the computer.

Before books the older folks was where we went for information. Grandpa had seen the droughts , heard about locust, seen how injuries heal.........you get the picture.

Once books and there information became readally available, slowly but inevitably elders became just "old and in the way" Its a terrable thing but it happens none the less. How many of us live with out parents?

The "brilliant socialists" you speek of gave us Social Security, what have you done for the elders?

Garry I heartily and earnestly embrace your reply, however (there's always a however) I cannot in all conscience place blame entirely at liberal philisophy's feet in this as all parties of whatever hue are as much to blame for our current crises, and to be honest? We are as much to blame as anyone else.

We got our snouts in the trough and did not preach the kind of manners and good housekeeping to our young. You cannot 'live the life' in a don't do what I do, do what I say attitude and expect young minds to understand the difference.

Plainly, we did not practice what we preached and I am grateful, at least, that my 2 lovely daughters did not go down the tube as a result of my broken marriages and consumnate lack of interest in their futures.

What is the way back from all this? I believe the ability to stand up and say "It's partly my fault - what can I do to fix it" is the first step on the road to redemption as in all cases of degenerate addiction.

What we've got? "Bankers are wankers, it's the fucking liberals, the Conservatives got it wrong, the greed of multinational corporations" yada yada yada "It's not my fault, so I'm going to sit on my fat ass until someone sorts it out for me, better still, I think I'll go on strike until the bastards learn that I want the same standard of living I had ten years ago. That'll teach them."

If we wanted a Government to govern and do good things for us and turned our backs to make another dry martini, then it's our fault. We should have been keeping our politicians honest instead of jerking off in the jacuzzi...

Tell you what Garry. I adore a challenge, and failure I see as an opportunity. Oh that I would be fit and younger again so I could get stuck in.

I peaked too bloody early mate...

Keith, I heard something very similar.

Success is the capacity to survive failure after failure without lossing enthusiasm.

Ask not what others have done Jim, what is your solution?

Is there anyway to discuss the future of the Western World without your constant descent into macro partisan politics?

Where and what is the Bay area? Would the Chinese like it? And what has flossing to do with it?

Domtoni,

Your source is as stated. But saying that this is what our liberal friend in the bay area read is just you showing how little you know!

Guys,

You must know that there are just as many mindless concervative articles out there.
NO ONE POSTS THEM!

There are just as many funny made up stories showing how dumb concervatives are
NO ONE POSTS THEM!

There are almost as many left wing media outlets that show out of context, missleading tapes that make concervatives seem to be stupid.
NO ONE POSTS THEM!

There are just as many jokes that belittle concervatives.
NO ONE POSTS THEM!

So guys answere me this. Why is it that its only mean spirited concervatives that play this CHILD'S game?

The guy is an old university friend, and he posted it on his Facebook page. I just picked it up to get a reaction. We actually had some decent discussion for a change.

+1 Keith!
We are all at fault. It's never too late to do something about it my friend. Even though you can't work in the physical sense, you have the internet at your disposal. Use your new bully pulpit to advocate change. You might be surprised at how effective one voice can be.

Jim,
I have no problem with a "pension" for retired folks, just run it like you would operate your own...never take out more than you put in, don't use "future funds for retirement" for today's expenses, and invest it in the capital markets so that it grows as least as fast as inflation. Our generation of politicians from every stripe has used these funds like a dope addict uses his checking account. They have killed the cow for meat and lost the milk and cheese.

Keith,

This thread, as do most discussions of "the western word" on our site, start with an attack on liberals. Who is being "partisan". Kieth is this so previlant that you no longer notice what happens here?

Very few speak for the other side. I am one.

I'm not sure there is a solution but safety nets are a good idea.

The Bay Area is on the West Coast of the United States. It surrounds San Fancisco Bay. This area is known for among other things, San Francisco, Marin County, nice weather, Stanford University, Cal Berkeley, Xerox Park, HP, Apple Computers, Lawence Livermore Labs, Oricle, Silicon Valley and the World Champion SF Giants.

What do Chinese and flossing have to do with this discussion?

Sorry mate that was a hair parting comment clearly..

Please continue with your pointless non discussions :)

And here i was thinking this was just a nice non-biased column that was a proof of journalistic integrity in American media! I saw way better writing in my college news paper.

To be quite honest I am puzzled by all this 'Liberal/Conservative' rhetoric and I do not profess to understand why many Americans seem to have been taking violin lessons despite the discernible glow of flames that can clearly be seen on the horizon, but I did think that article was extraordinarily vicious and unnecessary - is all US political comment couched thus?

Makes our electioneering, political debate and comment (in the UK in case the flag confused anyone) a bit like tea time in kindergarten by comparison.

Little wonder that the electorate get over excited, I mean that piece was just downright insulting.

Keith,

No where near all US political comments are this vicious.

Unfortunately, the good folks who choose to post this type of rhetoric on our site, do seem to choose the most inflamitory ones available.

So people outside the US like yourself see nothing but what appears to be usless arguments.

You'r right the piece that started this thread was downright insulting, and aimed at "the Bay Area" where I live. Just a coincidence? I doubt it.

Keith, you have been around this site long enough to be aware that this goes on virtually non-stop.

I really love a good debate, unfortunatlly I spend most of my time here arguing with people who actually believe this vicious rhetoric.

And I end up being the bad guy.

I begin to see your point Jim and yet I would say that people are most afraid of that which they don't understand.

Both viewpoints seem to be so entrenched and distant that an outsider like myself is constantly puzzled why no-one will take a step towards each other.

I believe we have an amazing political opportunity in this country if we resist the temptation of going down the path the US seems to tread politically and that is our Liberal/Conservative Coalition.

The best of both worlds? It's not going to be easy and it will be a first, but we have to have something different from the negative effect of the 2 party system which we too have endured for years ad nauseum ad infinitum - each blaming the other for 18 years of misrule blah blah blah. At least the Liberal Party will keep the Conservatives honest, whilst New Labour attempt to find a rudder to steer their leaking ship with. (Our Labour, your Democrats I would guess)

At least we should give it a chance, but there are those who are already trying to sabotage the new system, but the elctorate is strangely hushed. You might be forgiven for thinking that we are pretty tired of politics and the crooks that have been in power, and you may be right.

Jim, I think you need a couple more political parties to save your system, or is that not permitted under your Constitution?
