More USA political questions

Keith,

. The supreme Court did not strike it down, then Obama was reelected in a landslide. the AHCA is his greatest accomplishment, his signature Bill.

.

He was re-elected in an electoral landslide but the popular vote was not so decisive indicating he does not have a mandate. Sometimes I wish all states used the proportional distribution of electoral votes.

I disagree, sir. Although it did bite us in the butt this last time around, the Elect. Coll. as it was originally set up is absolutely THEE best way to ensure that one or two states with LARGE populations cannot dictate WHO will be elected to the White House. It also ensures that such states cannot, in effect, dictate what the fed govt will say and do in terms of laws, policies and regulations.

Fear not due to all your moaning about the current president salvation is at hand.

I particularly agree with points 4, 5, and 11 :)

A MESSAGE FROM THE QUEEN To the citizens of the United States of America from Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II In light of your failure in recent years to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately. (You should look up 'revocation' in the Oxford English Dictionary.) Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except North Dakota, which she does not fancy). Your new Prime Minister, David Cameron, will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed. To aid in the transition to a British Crown dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect: ----------------------- 1. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'colour,' 'favour,' 'labour' and 'neighbour.' Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters, and the suffix '-ize' will be replaced by the suffix '-ise.' Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (look up 'vocabulary'). ------------------------ 2. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as ''like' and 'you know' is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as U.S. English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter 'u'' and the elimination of '-ize.' ------------------- 3. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday. ----------------- 4. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not quite ready to be independent. Guns should only be used for shooting grouse. If you can't sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist, then you're not ready to shoot grouse. ---------------------- 5. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. Although a permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public. ---------------------- 6. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left side with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour. -------------------- 7. The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) of roughly $10/US gallon. Get used to it. ------------------- 8. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar. ------------------- 9. The cold, tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. South African beer is also acceptable, as they are pound for pound the greatest sporting nation on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of the British Commonwealth - see what it did for them. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion. --------------------- 10. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie Macdowell attempt English dialect in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater. --------------------- 11. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies). --------------------- 12. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the South Africans first to take the sting out of their deliveries. -------------------- 13.. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad. ----------------- 14. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776). --------------- 15. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 p.m. with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season. God Save the Queen! PS: Only share this with friends who have a good sense of humour (NOT humor)!

The issue in the U.S. is very simple, but very hard to overcome. We have managed to get ourselves into a 2 party dominated system that knows no way out. Jim and Larry both have responses above that prove that point perfectly. Each party has good ideas, but they are willing to murder those ideas for the sake of a winner take all. Both parties are filled with idiots that unfortunately don't cut their own nose off to spite their face, but rather cut the people's noses off instead. The unfortunate truth of the matter is that the best and brightest in our country don't run for office. They know better! Instead, we are forced to choose between either a bonehead from one party or a bonehead from another. In the end, you get a group of folks that could F'up an anvil with a rubber hammer. Neither of which they have to pay for.

I believe it was Thomas Jefferson that once stated that every democracy gets the government they deserve. We have no one to blame but ourselves.

Yes Tim, although the popular vote was fairly close, Obama received something like 5 million more votes than Romney, the Electoral Collage vote was:

Obama................332
Romney...............206

But Tim, keep in mind, this works both ways, you mention he has no mandate..................

Keep in mind that the Republican Congress who are acting like they have a mandate, did not even receive a majority of the Congressional vote!!!!!

In the 2012 Congressional election total votes cast:

Democratic Congressional votes.........53,952,2490

Republican Congressional votes..........53,402,642

For various reasons including redistricting and gerrymandering, the total votes cast for Republicans was less than for Democrats.

These morons are acting like they have a mandate, when in reality the do not even have a majority!!!!!

The majority of Americans wanted a Democratic House!

We need to force fair redistricting!!!!!!

Not done by the politicions!

Nick,
I totally agree. If we hadn't won the American Revolution we could be like Canada. At least under a parliamentary system the ruling party gets the PM. And I love your periodic personal grilling of the PM in Parliament. We could enjoy your culinary treats like bacon baps for breakfast.

Proportional Representation? The last throw of the dice by a political party who can't get elected any other way.

Italy.

Greece.

At least one change of Govt each year. The combinations of so called 'coalitions' is mind boggling.

The problem isn't that they would f up an anvil. The problem is the anvil cost 14 TRILLION dollars and its on a visa card issued by the bank of the United States as well as others.

Now one side whats to buy another anvil on credit while the other is still working on f ing up the first one and doen't see the need to share the rubber mallet. So the other guys want their own anvil and mallet.

The tea party on the other hand is saying we don't need any more anvils or mallets and if you guys would please stop f ing up the ones we have, they are just fine, will last a very long time if you do, and we can use our money to start paying off the credit card.

The president then says, what mallet, everybody needs a anvil and the tea party is the anvil scrooges.

Howard, Jack,

I know that the news services you listen to tend to exagerate, why dont you look at Massachusetts, they have had a very similar health care law for seven years and it is working just fine and is very popular with 62% approval rating........

************

As the stalemate in Washington over Obamacare continues, Republicans in Congress, seeking to defund the Affordable Care Act, ought to look to Massachusetts where the state’s landmark health care reform law is doing just fine.

That’s because the commonwealth, the state’s major health insurers and health care policy leaders have all been working together to make the 2006 law work.

Seven years after the health-care reform bill was enacted – under then-Gov. Mitt Romney, a Republican – health care spending in Massachusetts is growing at a slower rate than in the country overall.

****************

Massachusetts law is very similar to President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, and Romney’s law has been highly successful and, a new poll shows, very popular.

The poll from WBUR, an NPR-affiliate in Boston, finds that 62 percent of Massachusetts residents support Romney’s law, while just 33 percent oppose it.

***********

Howard, Jack,

You have been led to believe that this Health Care Law is just horrible and will cost huge $.

Please explain why it has worked just fine for seven years and is very very popular in Massechusetts, additionally, their health care costs are growing at a slower rate than in the country overall.

Let the South secede? YOU mean I'll have to use my passport to visit my godchildren and my house in NC? No fucking way. Drop that thought immediately.

Jack,

I'm very interested in your thoughts, the Massachusetts Health Care law is very similar to the AHCA, its very popular and its cost is nothing like you have been led to believe.

What are your thoughts?

After all, it turns out they really don't need thousands of armed IRS agents, perhaps other things you have been told are untrue as well:)

this is all I have to say (not to you Jim). Works with wife or girlfriend too...
Sweetie, I couldn't love you more than I do. I love and admire you. I appreciate what you do and the contributions you make to our family. Above all though, I have a deep, abiding respect for you.

That's why I want to fundamentally transform you.

Well, the first time didn't go so well for sure. That being said, one third of all jobs created in the US in the last 10 years are in Texas. Seems like they could secede and do just fine. In fact, many Texans would prefer to do just that.

Where's your house in NC? Lived in Charlotte for a while and my family populates a good chunk of the state.

Well I learnt a bit about USA politics last night from a high brow political TV programme called Have I got News for You.

To quote Ian Hislop a team captain on the show when talking about the current situation with the Republicans and Democrats being unable to agree on the budget.

Ian Hislop “The republicans can’t agree the fact they lost. They lost the election and they lost this vote repeatedly, but the tea party which is a sort of UKIP with guns, have decided that basically they don’t care.

America home of democracy, vote goes the wrong way you refuse to accept it, so they have basically said no we are not going to agree.

So they would literally rather America close down than a very very minor and not very radical change is made to public health care.”

Chairman “There are 800 thousand federal public workers been forced to take unpaid leave. According to the Guardian checking emails or answering calls would be a disciplinary offence….. An idea they got from BT. (British Telecom)”

This is the news that America has closed until further notice if your enquiry is urgent please contact Canada.”

To me a very enlightening view from an outsider with no axe to grind ;)

Can't the exact same thing be said of the Democrats? They're obviously just as willing to do exactly that, are they not? 'Takes two to tango in a situation like this, does it not?

Note that Obama has (according to reports) single handedly made some NINETEEN unconstitutional changes to Obamacare all by his lonesome. (The constitution doesn't authorize the president to change or amend any part of any law congress has passed.) And yet the "lamestream media" (-Goldberg) never mentions that. Instead, like you, they 'beat the drum' about the 'evil' GOP's legal attempt to try to change what they would like to see changed.

IMHO, this whole mess could be over in 10 minutes if the Demos would simply agree to grant a year's "waver" to 'the folks' re: implementation of Obamacare like Obama HIMSELF has already illegally granted to some big businesses, unions, and the like. What's good for the goose, and all that...

But, boil it all down to the bottom line and you'll find this whole thing is all about P-O-W-E-R for BOTH sides, plain& simple. Doing what's right for the country hasn't been the main motivation in politics for decades.

Never heard Republicans offer a solution for pre existing conditions. If you don't think that's a problem you had corporate insurance or are on Medicare. Ever try to take an individual policy with you to another state? Of course Republicans are always states rights guys so no effort to allow that either. Love the Tea Party seniors calling Obamacare socialist when it's Medicare that is. Know any seniors wanting to give up their Medicare and try to find private insurance?

Guess they're still thinking about that then Nick!

Good points by Hislop but I'm not sure he's not NO axe to grind :shifty:
