OK-ANOTHER ONE: 302 or 351 Windsor for a GT40 and How would you build it?

Totally agree about top end speed, but
most streat freaks are geared (rear/trans)
to max out at 120/130 mph anyway, so
aerodynamics isn't a big deal for 1/4 mile.

And you'd be surprised how quick a heavy car
can go. My stock Hemicuda ran 12.90 at 3900
lbs! Most 5.0 Stangs are 3000 to 3300 lb
depending upon body/modifications.
The rule of thumb is .1 sec in the 1/4 mile
for every hundred lbs. So if a Stang weighs
1000 more than a GT40 (probably less) it's
only giving up 1 second in terms of weight.

And you can EASILY lose more than a second
trying to gingerly get a stick car off the line, and "granny" shifting. I don't doubt there are some GT40s capable of running fast in the quarter mile, but those seem to be "track cars", rather than mostly street driven.

Gordon, what does your car turn in the 1/4?

I run a Buick Grand National at the local Dragstrip. It is 100% pure stock and I am faster than Mustangs that are slightly modified and my fastest times are in the low 13s I've run this car since 1986 and the mustangs have always been my competition.

More embarrassing to losing a stop light
contest to a Viper/Corvette/etc is to lose
an axle or a trans! (expensive too)

GT40's are not drag cars.
If you want one, be prepared to spend
MEGABUX on drivetrain parts.
The drivetrains in Viper/Corvette are designed ($$$) to take lots more power.

Even 5.0 Stangs warmed over will
smoke most GT40's in a drag race.
Sorry...just the way it is.

Just an FYI, Rick Merz's 351W GTD ran a
12.4/110 quarter with axle shafts about
to let go

at '98 Run And Gun. I
believe they broke later that day.

I should add - 351W, 450HP, Porsche G50/50,
44IDF Webers
