SL-C recommended engine/transaxle combos

By the time you purchase the proper harness, throttle control module (LS-1) ECU, reflash, etc. it is more economical to go with the LS-3 all the way for a street/track car. Modifications are becoming more reasonable and a good amount of HP may be had with minumum mod's (cam, valve springs, pushrods, etc.). Yes, you can have a used LS-1 at 350HP cheaply, then spend an equal amount or more for electronics.
My best choice is the LS-3 or LS-7 with a Ricardo or G-50 gearbox. I do like the 930 box as well, only a 4 speed, geared almost perfectly for a big V-8 and practically indestructable in stock form. Inverted, mine will have oil pump/cooler for good measure.

I agree with you guys. LS3 and G50 the best deal right now. Mendeola may offer an attractive alternative in the near future though.

Today we secured the build of a very cool engine and transaxle package for an SL-C customer...

We are going to install a full LMP1 Zytek V8 with an Extrac transaxle....similar to the units being used in some Riley and Scott cars and also the older Panoz LMP1 batmobile cars from 2000-2007.....should be fun...

Not quite in the same budget as the Mendeola and LS3 but way cool non the less....

Crash,
An LS376 and a six speed Ricardo GT transaxle can now also be done for 17k....

I think the transaxle is going to weigh more than the motor!

Yes....a stock LS3 costs me $5200 , pedal/computer for $899 and a G50 03 can be had for $2500 ... I just bought one for that over on FFR....the KEP clutch kit is approx $1400..
These are all prices that anyone can get with no "buddy" deals needed...
Voila $9,999...under $10,000

I keep all transaxle models in stock...Audi, ZF, Porsche G50 and 930 and Ricardo units..some in reconditioned, some new and others "as is" ....the one listed above at "2500" is as is....came from a good running car and has been in storage for a while...

Didn't you just answer your own question about a race SL-C???...

Well, I've been shopping around to try and find that price on a new crate LS3, and while prices have come down since last year when I bought mine, I am not finding anyone that has it for $5200. Care to share your source on that one?

Interesting. I thought that Judd was the basis for the Zytek stuff. Maybe some of the latest stuff, like 2008-2009, is something that started as a clean sheet by Zytek. I wouldn't know about those, but the earlier stuff that Zytek supported was Judd based as far as I know from talking to a couple people from the shop I used to work for.

Possibly, yes..

"Specialising in racing, Zytek quickly grew and expanded its business to include race engine build. In 1987 Zytek bought Alan Smith Racing, a company specializing in Formula 3000. Under Zytek ownership, Alan Smith Racing won the 1989 Formula 3000 Championship with Jean Alesi and the Jordan team. Soon after, Zytek (now dropping the Alan Smith Racing name) developed its own version of a V8 engine designed by Judd, with which it became the sole supplier of engines to the Formula 3000 series in 1996. Zytek retained the engine contract for an unprecedented nine years, until the end of the Formula 3000 Series at the end of 2004. In total this involved building 90 engines and clocking up more than 1.5 million miles during racing and testing."

[GASP!] A water cooled V8 in a 917? Can an LS spec be far behind?

I want Fran to add in the ability to stuff a big block ford or chevy into the 917 .... then I'd definately build one after the SLC ..... yea, yea, it's all about paying homage to the legacy of one of the coolest cars ever, but homage smomage, I want a big block, haha! :drunk:

That's funny
Having build a 914/V8 just out of high school that suffered from a lack of funding I promised to build that car over "right" someday. (Fast forward a few decades) I proposed to Fran I might want to stuff a BBC in the 917....he said you can do whatever you want but there is no place to put radiators! I imagined all aluminum BBC with Kinsler fuel injection stacks jutting up from befind the cockpit ala Can Am car. Sanity prevailed and I have an SLC now....actually the 917 was nowhere near ready then, otherwise I would have had a though decision to make.

Fran, is that the LS376 you're talking about? If not how much is it for an LS376 crate.? BTW, thansk for the deal on the Ricardo! Questiosn, do i need a 7210 lever kit with the clutch for the ricardo when i purchase form Ford?

That is a tough decision (atleast for me it was). What it came down ultimately to was the 917 was the ultimate in coolness, but I just didn't like the $$$$$ associated with the engine selections, lol. SLC prevailed there as well

I don't think sanity has any place in the thought process when deciding on an SL-C.

We are afflicted with different levels of insanity I suppose......zillion dollar Brembos....insane......

But that being said, I do have Big Brake envy.......<sigh>
