electric windows - original doors

Hi

This afternoon, among a pile of other original and replica GT40 stuff, I saw a pair of original GT40 doors with electric windows. All the motors were there and the outer rubbers were moulded to the curve of the rear bottom corner of both windows. Has anyone got any ideas on these?

Cheers

Rob

I believe Sabbaro installed electric windows on an original car after the fact but I also think they were removed and the car was put back to original.

Rob,

Do you have pictures you could post? It would be interesting to see what is required to fit roll up windows to one of these. For example, how did they get the window to clear the front part of the air inlet to the engine compartment?

Hi Jim

An amazing coincidence - I found the following image just an hour ago while researching something totally unrelated to GT40s - and I just answered my own question - wierd!

You are right that there was a Sbarro connection. However, I believe that these windows were originally from P1033, and were fitted by George Filipinetti, who wanted to create a luxurious road car, before Sbarro got involved. The car was built up from new with electric windows from an incomplete car supplied by Ford to Filipinetti for the Geneva show - it was not converted - you could argue that these were an "original" fitment.

Apparently, Claude Sage, MD of Scuderia Filipinetti, directed Hermann Graber to fit these windows, along with chrome headlamp surrounds (these look better than they sound - believe me), air con, radio, grilles for the NACA ducts and the twin nostril holes (these look worse than they sound - believe me), front over-riders, full leather interior, etc, etc.

After Filipinetti sold the car in 1968, ex-Filipinetti employee Frank Sbarro, ripped out these "improvements" and modified the car for competition. After the car burnt out, Sbarro put these mods back in, as well as (allegedly) replacing the chassis with a Sbarro monocoque chassis. It looks like the mods were taken off again some time ago.

Hi Kevin

The electric windows I saw today (and which for some unknown reason I made an offer on) are cleverly designed to include a fixed rear section, and are exactly the same as the attached image of P1033, from 1967. The windows I saw today lack the chrome surround. They came to the UK from mainland Europe in a deal involving a Bizzarrini, presumably from Sbarro. I will be having a closer look at these and the other items in a couple of weeks and will post photos of the exterior/internals then if anyone is interested.

Thanks Rob,

I would certainly be interested in seeing photos, especially of the interior of the door and mechanism. I have always liked being able to open the windows on a car. Even if it makes it slightly less authentic, I think it would improve the driving experience. (When you’re not going 140 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Hi again Kevin

Among the pile of other stuff, but in an unopened crate, I'm told that there are a number of opening side window sets per the MKIII - I think these are KVA items (per my thumbnail photo opposite) and they are in glass. If you are interested in these, let me know.

Cheers.

Opening windows would save the scratches, mad Springer likes the window open, head out, she can last up to about 70!! Then the jowel flapping gets too much!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif I like to be able to open the windows too.
Interesting, it would be good to find out more if poss.

I fitted some to my Lola. They are half like the Countash. They really work and are big enough for toll booths. (In the US as it's right hand drive tolls remain a problem.)

Jim,

One word (maybe two): EZPass

Rob, really interested in this as I'm making my molds now for the doors and would like to try this out. Any pics of the internal mechanism or leads would be greatly appreciated.

Off to the wrecking yard tomorrow for RX-7 mirrors!
