How do you select a dry sump oil tank?

I've noticed that the NASCAR people generally use a 5 gallon oil tank while Sprint cars look like they're using something closer to half that. That started me wondering if there's a calculation or rule of thumb for deciding what the volume of the tank ought to be. Do you start with the volume...

    gilmor belt drive.

I knew a rotary hoe in high school, and her belt kept slipping off too. Probably the result of a bent shaft in a misaligned coupling. "A bun is the lowest form of wheat." Oscar Wilde.

    gilmor belt drive.

Jac- Given all the caveats on Gilmer and toothed belt drives, why do they find such wide use on dry sump systems?

Looking for nice pictures of garages

Two things to consider (no pics, mine's an embarrassing mess right now) An overhead door takes up a lot of space and makes adding a lift later problematic. A small refrigerator (keg size) yields big dividends when asking friends to come over and help get the stuck floor jack out from under the...

    One for the Pilots

The F-111 ejection system blows the whole cockpit module off the aircraft and it's rockets carry it away in a complicated sequence, and I know of at least three instances where the parachute on the module (don't know the proper name) failed to deploy and the crew were lost. That has to weigh in...

    One for the Pilots

I'm glad to see there's been progress in adapting the Navy's style arresting gear to runways other than at the end- do the F-15 & 16s have hooks? In the 50s and 60s the AF had a type of flexible fence at the overrun that was raised from the tower if there was enough time. But there were some...

    One for the Pilots

Pete, just a minor correction- McNamara (Sec. of Defense under Kenedy & Johnson) wanted an aircraft that could do everything and be used by both Air force and Navy for cost efficiency. Fairly early on in development it became obvious that it was not very good at anything, and the Navy closed...

    suspension concept

I think we're of an age! A class project I was in in the '60s tried to model the behavior of an aircraft nose wheel on landing using an analog computer. Much simpler than your 3 axis problem, but while you can set the computer up to perform the linear differential equations representing the...

    California vs. Texas

To return to the subject: A Californian gets bitten by a coyote, goes home and starts fundraising for a "Jogger-Safe State" & "Let the Chips Fall Where They May!" candidate. The candidate is elected and introduces bills providing bllions for new, safer trails, wild animal preserves...

    Fuel Pumps

Thanks, Jim. High mount, low, or dealer's choice?

    Fuel Pumps

Is a single SW pump adequate for a four 289 Weber- ballpark 300 HP engine? Most photos I've come across show them in pairs- but were they drawing from separate tanks or in parallel from a selector valve outlet- and if parallel, for redundancy or increased maximum flow? Also, I bought the SW...

    dry pump pump placement

Thanks, Bob, that explains a lot and makes the choice easy! And thanks too, Jac Mac. I lose perspective when I get tired, but three fingers of Black Jack (any relation?) works wonders

    dry pump pump placement

Re: dry sump pump placement Thanks- I have a tight fit between the engine and chassis members and need to either modify the endine mounting support or move the dry sump pump mount up about 6". I hadn't thought about the cam drive pumps being higher than the crankshaft and apparently working...

    dry pump pump placement

I've read an article where an MG V-8 conversion used a dry sump pump placed at about the height of the intake manifold. I assume lower is better, but how much of a problem would placing the pump above the oil pan create on a 302 engine with a 3 or 4 stage pump cause?

    Girling caliper question

Thank you both, gentlemen. Limiting flexing makes more sense than what I had been thinking about which was shielding of some sort. Still, I wonder why it wouldn't have been put of the rears as well. I thought that flexing would have the same effect as pad wear, but then, it would have...

    Girling caliper question

These aluminum Girling AR calipers, circa 1965-70, are different, front vs.rear. The one has a steel horse shoe shaped plate fastened to the lower face, as seen in the photo. Can someone tell me what its purpose was and why it wasn't used on both front and rear calipers? Thanks, John

Getting fuel from both tanks with one pump.

I can contribute a couple of suggestions on valving, particularly check (one-way) valves. A swing check valve is about as simple and safe as you could get for tank to tank equalization. You can find them that seal bubble tight at zero back-pressure and open at as low a pressure as you chose...

    Syria

Politicians have eliminated Civics along with Music, Art, and any semblance of correct grammar from our schools, so no wonder half the population can't use Republic in a sentence let alone know describe how it differs from Democracy. (No offense, Sheik, it's easy to make the slip) “The American...
