The Pinto and the Kent block are NOT the same, the Pinto was never fitted into any form of Lotus. The bolt pattern at the rear of the blocks is the same, one of Ford's greatest innovations, so many of the ford based gearboxes will fit. You need to make up an adaptor plate to mate the Renault box...

The rack fitted to your car is almost certainly a Cortina III/IV/V rack. The Sierra rack might fit with a lot of bodging, but be sure to check that it is for leading steering arms as in the Granada uprights, or you might just find that the car goes left when you turn the wheel to the right! The...

Check the middle nylon bush at the bottom of the steering column. Some non GTD aftermarket ones are around that can bind, and give the impression of a heavy rack.
