    Jimmymac & Alistair's Cars

My Uncle Brian had a Shadow-ised Vincent Rapide, lovingly restored by him over a number of years. The bike below isn't his (he died in 1997) but very similar. He had new stainless spindles made for the Girdraulic forks, but the clearances were too tight, and on a rippled section of tarmac on...

    Early planning options on transaxle

Oh...and I understand that you can retro-fit a GT3 gearbox oil pump into a G50, but I don't know whether this still applies when the gearbox has been inverted for mid-engined uses. Eddy (closet P-car fan).

    Early planning options on transaxle

See here:- Particularly from 4:05... Harris "What was the most difficult component to make last 24 hours?" Norbert Singer (thinks) "Ach...it's the gearbox". Then goes on to explain the challenges of endurance racing. And if you're talking about Group C-levels of power, you're going to need...

    MDA GT40 Rebuild.

Oh, and I think that seats should be driver's choice....didn't Graham Hill ask for a "proper" racing seat to be fitted to Alan Mann XGT-2 for the start of the '66 race, as that was his preference? It's certainly there in the recent (albeit post-restoration) photos:- and chassis 1079 has the...

    MDA GT40 Rebuild.

Hi Jack Some other '40 interiors...think there's a mix of Mk2 and J-car in here:- Personally, I really like the flat, crackle-black panels.

    MK1 road car brakes

Hi - here's a photo of "XGT-2" being restored:- You can just make out the tab on the back of the brake pedal (between the bias-bar clevises) where the handbrake cable would have attached to pull the brakes on.

    MK1 road car brakes

MK1 has an under-dash handbrake lever, which pulls the brake pedal down. You'd never pass any sort of inspection with that set-up in a road car.

Thanks, James. I've never seen a collet of that pattern before - do you think it's Hobbymat-specific? In good news, the mill is back together, but when I switched it on for the first time I thought something was wrong and the spindle was stuck....because it was sooo quiet! Now I realise what...

    Road trip

Or - as my kids called it when they were little - "mouse cheese". I think because in every Tom & Jerry cartoon portraying cheese it was always Emmental! Emmental Brian's car (I may have mixed-up the captions...not sure).

OK - so I pulled it all apart:- The new bearings are now installed in the spindle (2 x angular contact ball races, opposed & preloaded and 3 x ball races). The other issue with this mill is the tiny MT1 taper in the spindle nose, but there's an option of a bolt-on cutter holder...

@Mic @weisserheilbronn @Mark Boyers @davidmgbv8 Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll test the annealing you describe - trouble is it's a large-ish panel and I have little spare aluminium for tests / fails! Will let you know how I get on.

Hi Michel - yes, it's currently 1.2mm aluminium sheet, supplied with the pre-cut panels from SGT. But, because I'm awkward, I want to roll beads into the sill top for stiffness and (to be honest) appearance. So, I used one of those cheap bead-rollers to put 1" beads into the pre-cut SGT...

I think you're right, Mark. Going to give it my best shot with the tools & techniques I have. There's always the option of flat sills, I guess? Thanks Markus - I think it was Lazze's Metal Shaping (or something like that) which put me onto the tip about wheeling the part before rolling the...

    Southern GT #48

I have also discovered the reason for the poor surface finish on all of my gearshift machined parts - tool chatter. Now, this is a little 1980s Hobbymat / Prazimat milling machine, and there's not a huge amount of mass or rigidity to start with, but clearly something else was amiss....so I've...

    Southern GT #48

I have rolled some beads into the sill top panels, but there's some distortion as some of the metal is pulled into the beads...apparently the top tip is to pre-stretch the areas which are going to be beaded using an English wheel which provides some extra material to draw into the beads...

    907/8 First serious outing

In that case....I have driven it in 1965! Well....a virtual copy of the circuit as part of a Grand Prix legends sim racing "1965 season" track pack. There are a couple of YouTube videos of Charade in 1958 / 59. Innes Ireland won in a Lotus 1100.

Absolutely agree, Neil. I have a few confessions to make...you know...between friends. I am in the UK, and these days it's much simpler to work with the metric system, purely based on the easier availability of tooling and fasteners in metric. Plus my lathe has a metric leadscrew (it originated...
