Homemade CFRP mid engine sports car

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys, here's the latest updates. Been busy sorting more of the front end out, plumbing the radiator, brake lines, cooling fans and making a shroud for venting the air from the rad. Its a really really tight package in there. Patiently waiting on the wheels...

Homemade CFRP mid engine sports car

Bought some more bits in recent weeks, radiator, braking system and wheels (wheels are delayed though waiting on stock, can't wait to test fit those!) Mounted the radiator on rubber isolators. I've connected bleed lines to the tops of both tanks which T together and then run down the tunnel, I...

NO new ICE cars registered after 2030 ?

Hi Jerry, as i understand it, manufacturers under 1000/cars year are exempt from the ban (which is now 2035 not 2030 ?) also (again .. as i understand it) that applies to car manufacturers .. companies that sell kits which are then IVA'd are separate thing anyway .. and i've not heard anything...

    Height of radiator bleed line

Hi all, just designing the layout for my cooling system, any guidance from anyone on the height of the radiator bleed line ? I can't see how i'm going to easily route it from the rad (front of car) to the expansion tank (rear of car) without dipping low down in the middle (such as through the...

    Brake servos advice

Hi guys, what are the prevailing thoughts on brake servos ? I'm aiming for a final car weight of only around 700kg and i'd decided that i wouldn't need any, but now i'm starting to second guess myself. what have others done ? and if using a remote servo approach what is your setup ? I plan to...

Homemade CFRP mid engine sports car

wow two updates in two weeks! this time, ducts for front brake cooling. Made the design in CAD and then 3D printed a multi-part mould, then used a wet layup approach and vac bag. I made it super thin, only 1 ply of 600gsm 0/90 twill and 1 ply of 300gsm +/-45 NCF. Then glued and riveted in...

Homemade CFRP mid engine sports car

thanks guys, Winter update .. last few weeks i've been manufacturing the steering, designing some brake cooling ducting systems, and shopping for braking system parts and trying to decide on wheel rims. here's the steering parts. I decided to try and make my own steering wheel, i 3d printed a...

Does anyone here have an EV?

We have one of each .. an ICE car (our old family car) and an EV (a Polestar 2 i get through work). We use both daily but to be honest we prefer the EV and use that whenever we can. Been running the Polestar for over a year now, at first we had all the usual anxieties about range and charging...

Homemade CFRP mid engine sports car

Hi all, a few updates Mostly been fabricating little bits here and there from my big box of carbon fibre fabric offcuts and using up my left over epoxy resin before it goes out of date. The main new thing to share is the pedal box; I need to swap out the accelerator pedal spring with a...

Homemade CFRP mid engine sports car

Tg is 200 celcius. I plan to add a heat shield to protect against radiation from the rotors, plus some brake cooling ducts to keep them cool. Conduction through the hub is a worry, but indicative data shows 200 degC should be enough. Temperature is the reason why this was plan C. My plan is to...

Homemade CFRP mid engine sports car

Going to update you all with the uprights i've been working on for the last few months Plan A was waterjet cut aluminium parts but the quotes i was getting were rather more than i wanted to pay .. so plan B was for me to cut the exact same parts out myself (very slowly) on my DIY CNC router...

Homemade CFRP mid engine sports car

that's an interesting option Andrew i've always been a worried with this kind of route with what to do with the engine electronics and immobiliser, whether its at all possible to lift all the control units as one and use them, or whether i'd need to go down an aftermarket ecu direction.

Homemade CFRP mid engine sports car

Plan A is still some form of V8 crate engine and whatever suitable transaxle i can find to mate it to But .... occasionally i dream about V10s and V12s, i even think they would fit. I'm very wary of the fact that this is going to be a slow build and the world is changing, so am holding off on...

Homemade CFRP mid engine sports car

Got two seats in now ! and they successfully passed rigorous testing by my little helpers. Am fabricating my suspension uprights right now, will post some photos of them soon, and in the background am thinking about the steering and IP.

Homemade CFRP mid engine sports car

got the first seat in, aside from an annoying problem from a spinning rivnut it went pretty easy. First i got the seat sitting at the correct position and angle. This was done by first sorting a bracket to the rear bulkhead to set the max longitudinal position (not fixed yet just resting...

Homemade CFRP mid engine sports car

Finished off the seat mould and made my first seat, after trimming the edges it mostly fits in the car - phew ! Next I need to make some brackets to mount it to the tub. I'm going for a fixed seat and adjustable pedals. I also need to sort the seatbelt anchorages, i'm going for a 6 point...

Homemade CFRP mid engine sports car

Thanks Neil, agree with you 100%. Computer analysis is my day job so this is something i'm comfortable with, in fact its a little bit one of the reasons behind my build - I spend all day developing cars only in the virtual world so this is my chance to satisfy my desire to get my hands dirty...
