Like the infamous driver in the song "30,000 Pounds of Bananas", it sounds like the truck driver should have downshifted when going down the hill, instead he used the brakes and they caught fire.

When I said "going down the hill", I should have said "mountain". According to my wife, I-80 goes over the Sierra Nevada mountain range to get from Reno to California (the truck was westbound). The elevation at the Donner Summit (near Donner Pass) is 7,239' (2,200m).
