CarCoons?

This thread was inspired by the car cover thread, but wishing to keep that one on topic, I thought I would post a fresh topic.

I was recently asked my thoughts on Carcoons. These are air bubbles that you sit your car in and run off a small electric pump to keep the plastic bubble inflated. I don't have one and only know of one user. My thought was rather than spend the money on a carcoon (these are not that cheap!) sealing your garage and using a dehumidifier would be a better long term bet.

Anyone out there had experiences to the contrary or would like to add to this?

I've been considering a carcoon too and it seems that one of their main features is to prevent condensation by isolating your car from rapid temperature changes.

Apparently, this is what causes condensation and is what should be avoided at all costs.

Malc, reading your post about sea containers, it may be worth thermally insulating them to help with this. When I worked on a farm in my younger days they insulated the livestock buildings with polysytrene (?) tiles - if you sat on one, they kept your bum really warm.

Another benefit of carcoons is that they offer first class dust protection too. I've noticed that my car cover lets through a tiny amount of dust on to my precious paintwork!

On the other hand, carcoons are NOT cheap!

Hope this helps.

With a little time you can make a carcoon of your own. A pal of mine used polythene sheet with a timber edge. It's hoisted from the roof joists & the timber edge then rests on the floor & is held down with weights.

He uses a dehumidifier in one ond, that is 'piped' back to the other end, creating a constant flow of dried air.

A humidity meter in the car shows just how well it all works. We joke that it'll crack his leather!

Cost-S/H dehumidifier ~50 UKP
polythene & timber ~30 UKP

Malcolm,
I guess it will be down to a question of space as well!! If you still need to get into your garage to use and move about on a regular basis, then would you want to play horizontal bouncy castles??
