That article on the Gulf Oil color scheme missed an important point. The colors were originally the Gulf corporate colors- light orange and dark blue but Grady Davis determined that the dark blue "did not photograph well" so they changed to the light blue color of Gulf's California subsidiaries.

It is entirely possible that it is cut and paste. However because I never really wanted any details about the Gulf cars, I've never Googled it. I just stumbled upon it and thought it was somewhat interesting. Perhaps I was incorrect.
