Oil Pan fitment to CAV & GTD

Hi Brian -

Not too sure of the answer but these might help.

The pic above is Roy's GTD back in 2000, but knowing Roy - it might have been modifed already - not too sure.

On second thought's I think this mount has already had the engine mounts lowered - although the x member is in std position.

I just received some pics of my friends new CAV 302 and it sports a 9 quart Kevco big sump oil pan. Does anyone know if this will fit a GTD chassis? From the pictures I can find, the CAV does have a cross member, but I do not know if it occupies the same space as the GTD crossmember.
Thanks
Brian

It will really depend on which trans you use as the input shaft centerline is lower on the ZF than the Audi or Porsche boxes.

Brian,

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm sure there are a few forum members that have used an original GT40 pattern sump, available from Aviad or Armando's.

Paul, nice shot of Roy's chassis, I'm impressed by the chassis mods to the lower A arm pickups, great idea.

Further to Wayne's and Julian's responses, I can state that an Aviaid pan will NOT fit a CAV with ZF without some modification of the crossmember. I don't know how this translates to a GTD, but from the photos it looks like those diagonal braces would cause additional fitment problems.

I've never heard of a Kevco, so can't comment on what it takes to make that fit...

I agree the Amarado pan will fit the CAV after the crossmember is modified. The pan is very long front to back so the crossmember should cross near the front of the starter. I have pictures of my cross member mod. and can post if anyone would like to see.

Hi guys, thanks for all of the feedback. Joes car is one of the new stainless chassis and he runs an Audi gearbox. I'm mostly interested in the additional volume as I had anticipate using a Canton sump at 7 quarts, then I saw the 9 quart Kevco, which I have never heard of either, and developed an interest. I'll check the capacity of the other oil pans mentioned.

Julian,

I was also interested in the lower A arm pickups. I looked at the photo and thought 'what's different?', the chassis looks much lighter/weaker. I thought this was a crucial point for the overall chassis rigidity I was intrigued by your comment - what's the reason its better? Knowing Roy's expertise I am sure it is but why?

Hi Dave,

I guess this would be best answered by Roy or Paul, but it looks like they have changed the longitudinal chassis members that pickup the A arms from Box section to angle, leaving the transverse member untouched.

I believe the transverse member takes much of the rear end loadings.

The reason for the mod is to lower the gearbox and engine in the chassis, giving obvious benefits to the C of G.

When the engine & box is lowered, a shallow sump will be needed to retain ground clearance.

Another way of lowering the engine significatly is to invert the gearbox, bringing the crank centerline below the driveshafts centerline. When using a Renault box inverted, the crank centerline is 6" lower than standard.

The Canton sadle sump when fitted to a standard GTD engine bay has about 2 plus inches between it and the cross member so is good for lowering the engine so that the bottom of the sump is in line with the bottom of the chassis rail, go lower at your own peril! Mine only has wings on one end but I am sure there are versions out there with wings at both ends. I also know they do versions with asymetric wings which are used for oval racing. However all give more capacity. Add an oil cooler and you get even more capacity. Anyone know just how much a typical oil cooler set up adds?

I have a Canon 7Qt in my GTD. I went in without a hitch. I think the 9qt is just deeper and otherwise the same externally. You might want to check with Canon.

Does KEVCO have a web site. I tried Kevco in search with no luck.
