Some of you may have come across my nostalgia website illustrating the arcane history of British stock-car racing between 1955 and 1975. In it are photos of the stock-car builder and racer Ron Webb of Slough, who body-prepped the John Wyer GT40s for Le Mans. Ron also got hold of a GT40 motor for his stock car, reverting to a single 4-barrel carb: "Ron's dad Bill overbored it, and it revved like crazy. He also tried to get one of their 7-litres but couldn't."
The car [below] was mechanic'd by Dick Elliott, member of another stock-car clan from Slough:
Earlier in the sixties, Vanwall mechanic Rod Dore was able to get an ex-Thinwall Ferrari Superamerica gearbox for the Olds Rocket motor in his own stock car: They may have been miles away from tweed jackets, the RAC, and Goodwood, but stock-car racers in Britain had an unrivalled reputation for "chutzpah" and hands-on D.I.Y. and those bumpers had a real purpose too ;-)
