Republicans, what is wrong with you?

Keith,

I'm sorry to have insulted you:)

But, as the "Great Man" and I both share the "gift of Dyslexia", I'm not so sure that he would have been bothered by that at all. We as a group tend to be fairly forgiving when it comes to spelling.

By the way, didn't Mr Churchill have a title.........Sir, Lord, God.....

Oh, I am not at all bothered Al, it's the other 65,999,999 you've got to worry about. OK, I am being disengenuous here, would you settle for a round dozen?

He was Sir Winston. To be honest, I would have thought many Americans would also have been proud of him - owing to his 'American' blood, but perhaps not so much for his manipulation of the USA over Pearl Habour.

Keith,

I have always been a big fan of Sir Winston.

He led an incredable life with many ups and downs. He is probably best remembered in the US for his powerful speeches, great determination and artfull use of the English language.

As far a "manipulation" goes, he always did what he felt was best for his People, you can't ask for more than that.

The right man at the right time, we are all better for it!

When the bust of Churchill was returned, my British friends felt insulted.

Now back to watching paint dry.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

Domtoni, I know you are out there.

If as it turns out the Bust of Churchill was not rudely returned, and it has stayed in the White House.

Why did your British friends feel insulted?

I'd say that Winston Churchill is probably as universally admired and respected in the US as anyone. Almost without question. More so than even FDR and Reagan who generate equal amounts of love and hate from the respective "sides." We didn't see some of his failings before and after the War so we have a uniformly positve view of the guy.

We see him as the guy who first stood up to Hitler, who was smart, witty and tough.

GEEZ--imagine this, coming from the Republicans, who raised holy hell so much that Bee-OH caved in and gave them what they wanted (he not only reversed his decision to try the Gitmo detainees in civil courts, but also reversed his decision to close Gitmo altogether):

"WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans on Tuesday demanded tougher restrictions for terror suspects at Guantanamo even after President Barack Obama reversed course and ordered the resumption of military trials for detainees.

Obama had promised to close the prison upon taking office, but fierce congressional opposition to moving detainees to the United States has stopped him."

Imagine that  ....really, what IS wrong with them? Can they NEVER get enough???

No cheers (for the Republicans) from Doug!!!

Doug,

Here is some interesting new info about the Wisconsin issue.

Even the conservative Rasmussen poll shows that Wisconsin Governor Walker's disapproval rating is 57% with only 43% approving.

Additionally, a drive to recall Wisconsin Republican Senators is moving quickly ahead!

It appears that the people have spoken!

Damian, you started these threads with a rant: Democrats, what is wrong with you......You said "when are you going to stop this nonsense" and called them the modern socialist party. I was not aware that Wisconsin was a socialist state.

Well Damian,

What are your thoughts now?

I really enjoyed hearing a Fox reporter trying to report from Wisconsin with the people of Wisconsin chanting FOX LIES....FOX LIES.....FOX LIES.......

When you have lost middle America you have lost!

Yep, Jim, this today from the AP:

"MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has offered to keep certain collective bargaining rights in place for state workers in a proposed compromise aimed at ending a nearly three-week standoff with absent Senate Democrats, according to e-mails released Tuesday by his office.

Walker has repeatedly said that he would not budge on the key parts of the bill that's been stymied in the Senate after Democrats left 19 days ago. Since then, the pressure to deal has increased as protests reached as large as 80,000 people, polls show the public want a compromise and recall efforts were launched against 16 senators, including eight Republicans."

People will tolerate only so much of the draconian "Let them eat cake" tactics the Republicans have used....it takes a huge number of signatures to get a recall on a ballot, so the people of WI must have "seen the light", so to speak. The article only says "...including eight Republicans", no mention of the remaining 8. I would assume the majority of them would be Democrats, but there might well be some independents in those 8 others, also.

Looks to me like Governor Walker is running scared, too.....the next recall referendum might well just be one to have him removed with the approval numbers you mentioned.

Cheers from Doug!!

Doug,

I heard that in Wisconsin, you only become eligible for recall after two years, they say that is the only reason that Walker is not being recalled.

I find it incredibly satisfying that it only took two months for the selfish, conservative republicans to turn a state like Wisconsin against them!

It appears that the republican version of wealth redistribution (take from the poor and give to the rich) has been soundly defeated!

Damian,

I know that when you started this discussion, you felt very strongly that the Democrates were way out of line and you called them several names.

Now that the full story is coming out and the public is overwhelmingly behind the Democrats, we would like to hear your thoughts!

<!-- surphace start -->With no end in sight to the standoff in Wisconsin over Gov. Scott Walker's budget proposal, Democrats announced Wednesday they would attempt to recall Republicans who support the governor's plan to save money by stripping state workers' collective bargaining rights.

Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate said recall papers were filed against eight GOP state senators who have stood behind Walker "and pushed his partisan power grab."

Tate asked for donations to support the party's recall efforts.

"Make no mistake, these Republican senators are vulnerable to recall for their radical partisan overreach," he said, pointing out that some of the Republicans won their last elections by very slim margins.

"By recalling just three of the eight senators we are targeting, we can regain control of the Senate," Tate said.

Meanwhile, the GOP is hitting back at the 14 state Democrats who fled Wisconsin in a bid to avoid a vote on the governor's controversial budget.

Senate Republicans passed a resolution Wednesday that would impose a $100-per-day fine for members absent without leave for two or more session days. It would also strip missing lawmakers of their expense accounts. The new rules go into effect Friday.

Tens of thousands of demonstrators have been gathering for weeks outside the state Capitol to sound off against Walker's budget bill. The measure is just one vote away from being sent to the governor for his signature.<!-- surphace end -->

Way to WORK WITH OPPOSING PARTIES. Some of the arguments in both of these threads just doesn't warrant my response since they are ridiculous at best even though they are heart felt. Some have had way to much juice and for them NOT EVEN GALATIC FORM OF REALITY AND TRUTH will help them.
Walker isn't doing what's popular as the democrats; he is doing what is necessary! Oh if some of you are going to use skewed polls (1000 Democrats who are union workers polled no surprise a majority will disagree with walker. I sh!t you not that was one of the polling factors in one quoted poll). Either way don't worry I'm around just waiting for someone to post up something that is not skewed or just completely off.BTW how does any of this justify the democratic senators NOT DOING THEIR JOBS!! WHY NO CALLS TO RECUSE THEM YOU BUNCH OF HYPOCRITES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, he's answered, but in line with the tactics of the far-right, he's just repeated his previous position without anything new to change people's minds. We all know the measure is just one vote away from being sent to the governor for signature, that's why the Democrats all fled the state. Only one returning Democrat would give a quorum, it would not increase the number of votes for the measure, it would just allow the vote to be taken.

In my opinion the Dems ARE just doing their jobs, they are representing the true interests of their constituents, who rely on the unions to keep the business owners/government from running roughshod over the rights granted to the working class.

Just b/c it doesn't allow the radical right to achieve it's nefarious intents, doesn't make it wrong for their constituents. In fact, I'd imagine (I am the master of understatement, aren't I?) that all of those Republicans who are frothing at the mouth over the delay actually have constituents who would NOT benefit from the bill being passed. Are those Republicans representing those constituents? No, they are representing the party line, which is apparently "Victory over the Democrats at all costs", regardless of how it affects their constituents whose very livelihood may depend on the benefits provided by their unions.

"Recuse"? In effect, they have recused themselves, as you seem to believe they have an interest in the results of the pending vote:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/recuse

You probably meant "Recall".....as in an action to remove an elected official from office for malfeasance or failure to perform.

Cheers from Doug!

Doug you should of held off with the spewing of yet more GARBAGE before you posted. I do love how you all seem to want to address me as that plays to my ego well. It also shows that on some level no matter how deep and hidden I have touched each and every one of you and have made you all start to doubt your selfs. Hard to admit to oneself but just know that I know and embrace the feeling!!!

Hey all I posted was an article contradicting the lies that it was the people calling to recuse the senators. No opinion at all just fact. The issue some seem to have is that the facts don't jive with their views so they do and behave EXACTLY HOW THEY ACCUSE OTHERS. One just actually posted and I still and giggling because it shows just how immature and back wards the general thought process and I quote "Just b/c it doesn't allow the radical right to achieve it's nefarious intents, doesn't make it wrong for the constituents."

Nefarious Intents  , Exactly who's constituents would you be speaking of his or yours because depending on which side of the looking glass you are on it make perfect sense. Wake up people!!!!!

Damian,

We asked you to comment because you started this discussion with an attack on Wisconsin Democrats. You said, what is wrong with these people.

Now as the whole story has come out, we wanted to see how you now felt.

It obvious that the facts have not changed your opinion, only made you angry and defensive.

Typical!

And this guy wants to represent the Republicans in the next election for POTUS?

I had to laugh out loud! Gingrich really believes he represents the modern Republican party, perhaps this will help explain "What is wrong with Republicans" if he really does!!

"ATLANTA (AP) — Newt Gingrich says his passion for his country contributed to his marital infidelity.

"There's no question at times of my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate," Gingrich said.

The twice-divorced former U.S. House speaker has admitted he had an affair with Callista, a former congressional aide, while married to his second wife. It happened at the same time he was attacking President Bill Clinton for his relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky."

Unvelievable :furious: !!

Next he'll be blaming the founding fathers for having created a political system that results in certain individuals working "...far too hard...", leading them to engage in unethical and immoral behavior.

Let's hope he IS the candidate for POTUS, and that the other individual on the party ticket is Sarah Palin  !

So, Jim.....I gotta admit, I think there's PLENTY wrong with the Republicans! The only saving grace is that the issues don't seem to be limited to only we Americans, as the posts from our friends in the U.K. clearly illustrate.

Cheers from Doug!!

Well, Damian, we couldn't agree more about that!

Poverty was a significant area of research as I was proceeding through my career in education. Here's one example of how the different economic categories view things:

When it comes to food, our society was separated into 3 groups, those who live in poverty, those who are a part of that broad "middle class" that usually includes the blue-collar workers typically represented by unions, and the last was the wealthy class.

It seems that the primary concern regarding food among those who live in poverty is "Was there enough?". No surprise there.

The primary concern regarding food among that broad "middle class" is "Did it taste good?".

The primary concern regarding food among the wealthy is "Was it pretty?".

While I understand that to many food is an art form, I find it quite offensive that the wealthy could prioritize that. I would see no problem with the wealthy getting a healthy dose of reality....in fact, I see that there is a new "reality show" on TV where a millionaire (or, was it a billionaire???) is immersed in the "homeless" lifestyle for a while. Apparently it is a life-changing event for those who undergo the experience, i.e. it changes the "side" of the looking glass for them.

The affluent/wealthy have truly lost touch with what the general population in America endures.....their biggest fears are that the economy might get bad enough that they have to give up one of their yachts or one of their vacation condos in the Carribean.

Give me a break......they need a change of view, IMHO, to a different "side of the looking glass", as you say!!!!

Cheers from Doug!!

Guys,

Damians reaction to the events in Wisconsin brings to mind some of the real problems that have plagued the Republican party and will continue to plague them

The Republican party has long been known as "THE STUPID PARTY"

If you do not believe me just Google those words and read the articles.

They always seem to do things in such a way that they do far more harm to themselves than to the other side. They continually insist on taking stands that have very little up side and huge downside.

Just some recent examples, there are many more!

(1)Wisconsin, a very new and inexperience politician decided to take on the teachers union. This should have been a small story, with a very small up side. The Republican leaders, Limbaugh, Beck and the others decided to make this a nationwide story.

They made it a big deal, they made a big stand that did not need to be made and they have lost big time.

The up side of this issue for them would have been a small dent in a small state's budget. The down side is the have angered and energized teachers and union folk not just in Wisconsin but across the nation! Very big down side! "The stupid party"

(2) A few months back the Republicans put them selves in a position where they said "Until we get tax cuts for the richest 1%, we refuse to extend health care for Ground Zero first responders. The up side, tax cuts for folks who do not need them, the down side.....massive! Republicans appear to care more for rich folks than the folks who ran to help in our time of need! "The stupid party"

(3) The newly elected Republican majority in the house. They said that their first and only issue was jobs........and only jobs. They get to Washington and what do they do?

SB-1 an attack on the right to choose! The up side, very small, the down side.........MASSIVE! A large majority of Americans are pro choice ......"The stupid party"

(4) Now these geniuses are going after NPR & PBS, the up side very small savings, a few minutes of the cost of Bush's wars. The down side MASSIVE! With very little gain, they have turned millions of folks who enjoy these programs against them........."The stupid party".

(5) Gun talk, even after they were told over and over not to use the "first Amendment solution, reload" talk they continued and continued to use it. The up side? Pandering to folks who already supported them. The down side........MASSIVE! Live by the gun talk, die by the gun talk!

THE STUPID PARTY!!!
