The Trip[ Down Under...

I returned home from Australia yesterday. It was an outstanding visit. The trip over was long, very loooong, but worth every minute. I stayed with Robert Logan at his beautiful home. His family treated me with unbelievable hospitality. I felt like part of the family the whole time I was there.
The beauty of Australia is over whelming. The landscape and the weather couldn't possibly be more perfect. The first day there I went to work with Robert at his factory. It's a large building that has several sections dedicated to certain build tasks on the GT40. There was four GT's there under construction. I met the entire work staff and I was impressed with their knowledge and abilities. These people really exemplify quality work. They try extra hard to make things perfect. As an example, there was a GT there that was being built for a customer that really impressed me. It was a turnkey that has everything. To start with it had a six point roll cage, full AP six pot racing brakes, ABS brakes, Aluminum block 302 with six speed trans, Remote entry with alarm, and a front and rear remote adjusted sway bars. It's also equipt with 8 barrel injection, A/C, leather interior and remote mirrors.
On the second day there I was invited by Robert and Norman Faulkner to play golf at a beautiful country club called The National in Melbourne. When we arrived I met Tony who was a freiend of Normans. I truly enjoyed the round with these fine gentleman. They showed me hospitality and kindness I'll soon not forget. The golf course whipped my a$$ but there will be another time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
The first week end Robert took me to the Phillip Island Historic Racing event on Phillip Island. Robert and I drove Norman's beautiful red GT40. The trip was about an hour and a half one way. It was a very comfortable ride. Once there we were parked in the VIP area sponsored by a Casino company called Tattersall's. The other cars in this area were incredibable. There was Ferrari's, Jaguars, and many other fine classic collectables worth fortunes.. I really had a ball there. There was even a real GT40 there, 1109 I think. It was painted in Gulf livery. The owner was a very nice guy who was pleased to show off the car to me and Robert. There was all kinds of beautiful historic racers there. Being in the garage area was really neat. I was able to get up close and personal with the cars. The folks over there are serious about their racing. They went at it full bore regardless of vehicle value. Several cars did recieve serious damage. Just goes to show they were racing not playing. This is something I will always remember.
The next week end was the Melbourne Formula one Grand Prix. All I can say is WOW!!! I have never been to a Grand Prix before. It is indescribable. The noise is something you have to expeirence to know. Taking pictures was usless as these cars whiz by way too fast to get a goood shot. No way can I explain the expierence. You'll have to go to one to know what I mean. Pat Barry is a F1 fan and he told me about it but I now know why he loves it so much. No way he could have expressed what it was like. Michael Schumacher ran away with it. After the Grand Prix we went to the Melbourne Motor show at the exhibit center. There was some very interesting cars there on display. One of those cars was called an Elfin. I'll leave it at that cause I have some pictures I will post soon. I still had a hard time sitting in a car with the steering wheel on the right side. It's really odd to see all of these cars with the wheel on that side.
To all you guy here on the forum from Australia, You live in a wonderful place and I can see where your pride comes from. You are all a hardy bunch and you build great cars.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I can't wait to go back,

sounds like it was a great trip! I really want to make a trip to Austrailia myself someday (to visit the RF plant and have a looksee at some GT40s! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif ).

Oh, also congratulations! I didn't look at the date of the magazine (maybe it is old)... but I was in the bookstore today thumbing through Kit Car magazine and saw that there was a picture of your RF Hershal.

Hersh,

It was great to have you here, if it was not for the snoreing you MIGHT get an invite back.

Seriously mate, we will play the golf on your FIRST day here the next time. I have to win and I thnk I might just have a chance if you are MORE than half asleep.

Best wishes,

Robert

Hersh, I'm green with envy. I have wanted to go to Australia for several years, ever since reading Bill Bryson's excellent "In a Sunburned Country" travelogue. To top it off you not only saw the RF factory and a vintage race but an F1 event, as well! Talk about a fantastic trip. If I were to do any one of those things on a vacation I'd call it a success, to do them all in one shot is outstanding. You deserve it, my friend--glad you're back in one piece!

G’Day Hersh (King Jam Donut),

Glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit.
It was great to meet you in person and we really appreciated your enthusiasm and wealth of knowledge that you freely shared during our short meeting. Unfortunately there was a quite a bit of information overload so expect several emails requesting refresher courses as I travel through my build.
You will have to allow more time on your next visit and take a trip up to sunny North Queensland for a spot of fishing. It would be a pleasure having you up this way for a visit.

Thanks again.

John,
You really should take the time and go see the factory and the beautiful country side around Port Phillip bay. I can't describe it. You will have to see it to believe it. The factory is worth a look see. All the guys that work there are very keen on their jobs and I learned tons from them. Robert is fortunate to have such an educated crew.
Bob,
You are correct. I am one lucky dude. The experience was something I will always remember. I wish all of you could see how neat of a place it is and how great the people are. I told Robert that it was like going back in time to the 1950's. They aren't big on malls. they still retain the small shops and downtown era. It reminded me of my youth in a small town. It really impressed me.

Peter,
The pleasure was truly all mine. I keep saying it over and over but it's so true. I was treated so well and that, I will always remember about your country. Anytime I can assist you or any of your countrymen please let me know.
Dog gone it Peter !! you went and said the majic word...FISHING !!. I love it and that's the one thing I miss the most about living in the desert. I even take vacation once a year to Key West Florida so that I can saltwater fish. If I come back I will try my hardest to get the chance to go fishing with you.

Hersh. It was great to catch up with you in OZ. We are very very fortunate to live here. The day after we played golf I climbed into an Elfin Clubman to contest the Grand Prix Rally. The new Elfins you saw at the Motor Show are very interesting. They came into being after one of the designers from General Motors Holden (yes the new Pontiac GTO ) wanted an Elfin but did not like the old traditional type (Lotus 7). GMH got involved and the end result were the cars displayed at the Motor Show. They are beautifully built with Gen 111 V8 and six speed box and GMH diff. 0 to 100 is 3.5 secs They can be looked at on www.elfin.com.au. They sold quite a few at the Motor Show and I think Bob Lutz of GM may have one going to the US. Anyway Hersh hurry back here as I have organised a set of left handed golf clubs for the rematch. Regards Norman

Hersh, that's really interesting. I don't know if you've read the book I referenced (if you haven't, get it for the flight down under next time you go--it's funny), but Bryson says exactly the same thing--something along the lines of "small-town Australia will forever be the American midwest of the 1950's."

Please post some pics if you took any.

I have been looking int GT40's for some time now. And i too have just been lucky enough to visit Robert and the guys at Roaring Forties on wednesday. After a 8 hour drive from Sydney, i was greeted like an old friend, by people i had never met before. Thanks to all at RF for the tour, coffee and chat.
The trouble is, now i have been bitten real hard by the bug. I have to have one. Sensibility has gone out the window. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I've always wanted to visit Australia.

We currently have 3 vacations lined up. Caribbean cruise next month for 2 weeks (our anniversary), Rome week later in the year and then next year we're hoping to do the Panama Canal Cruise. Maybe we can do Australia after that. Sure hope too.

The greatest country in the world. But they also love their speed cameras (every policeman has at least 2). If the country, the weather and the people could be combined with the rules of the Autobahn, it would be perfect.

I hear they have good looking babes. Can anyone verify that?

We certainly have our fair share of babes here. We also have MORE THAN our fare share of speed cameras (AKA revenue collectors) too.

Hersh,
glad you had a good time and thanks for the kind words about our country and the welcome you got from us.We go skiing most Januarys in a little cattle town in Colorado called Steamboat Springs and the welcome my wife and I got the first time from the locals was sensational!! So much so that we bought a condo the first year (1992) and have adopted that little piece of America as our own.
When you come back look me up. I also love fishing, anything
from river, to big game. I was very proud of the two trout I caught in the Yampa river on fly at Steamboat a couple of years ago. I was all for having them for breakfast, but as it was off season we had to release them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif Cairns in North
Queensland is the home of 1000lb Marlin, maybe when next you get over here we could have a shot at one?(tag and release of course.)

Hersh,

I am jealous!

Hate to admit it but you have done what I have long dreamed of doing. When I got out of the Navy, I actually looked into emigrating to Australia. If I had had my degree at that time, I might have been able to. Oh well.

Regards,
Lynn

Pete,
Thanks for the kind offer. I sure hope to take you up on that fishin' trip. Me and my bride were camping all through Colorado last year and we made it through Steamboat. Most of our time was spent near the Gunnison canyon.

Bob, I'm going to buy that book. It's seems I've been trying to learn more about that great place.

Lynn,
We all have those woulda, coulda, shoulda's.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
One day me and the wife will spend as much time as possible there. I want to rent a motorhome and travel about Australia so that I can see as much as possible.

Lynn,

I would be happy to invite you and your family to spend some time with us in Australia. We could tell stories (lies) about the times we had in our respective Navy's.

Best wishes,

Robert

Lynn,
If you do take Robert up on his offer...the navy stories
alone are worth the trip. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Blackjack,

The cycling of the temperature could be caused by the rush of coolant going through the thermostat and quickly closing. The engine temperature increases than the thermostat will open slightly. The temp gauge pick up is normally fitted very close to the thermostat and it will read the increasing temperature. As the thermostat opens a "rush" of colder coolant flows through and this flows past the thermostats temperature file and immediately closes it. The rush of coolant quickly drops the temperature arround the temp gauge sender and the temperature guage reads lower very quickly. Alas the cycling !!!!!

The is not something to worry about and can be fixed with the moving of the temperature guage sender.

I am glad the GT40 cooling seems fixed, please contact me if I can be of any more help.

Best wishes,

Robert
