P/1085 Mecum Auctions Kissimmee 2026

I realize P1085 was only a chassis originally, but calling it a MkIII seems odd considering it has nothing like a MkIII body.

According to the auction site listing, P/1085 was one of 20 chassis ordered by Ford as part of the MkIII program. Seven were completed as MkIIIs, leaving 13 unused "MkIII chassis".

I've been unable to verify this claim using Ronnie Spain's book (2003 ed.) and the SAAC World Registry (2008 ed.). As far as I can tell, there were only seven unused "MkIII chassis" from the period, and P/1085 is not among them:

• P/1086
• P/1108
• P/1109
• P/1111
• P/1112
• P/1113
• P/1114

Have I missed something? Can someone here shed more light on the matter?

According to Ronnie's latest ("Ultimate Ford GT40 Vol.1") 1085 was originally a LHD MkIII chassis but by the time of sale to its first owner in 1969 as a rolling chassis it had been converted to RHD. It was sold to Gil Jackson in NY, via Malcolm Guthrie.

Thanks for the comment, Bill. According to Ronnie Spain's latest book, what were the 13 "unused MkIII chassis". There should be six more in addition to my list above, including P/1085.

More gospel according to Ronnie...
Due to low demand, of the 20 chassis assembled for the MkIII production run only 7 were actually then built into MkIIIs, M3/1101..M3/1107. The remaining 13 were either built up in period as "late production" cars (P/1080, P/1081, P/1082, P/1083, P/1085, P/1086) or sold as post production chassis (which Ronnie and Willment retrospectively gave numbers P/1108, P/1109, P/1110, P/1111, P/1112, P/1113, P/1114). P/1110 and P/1111 were used as replacement chassis for P/1012 and P/1078 respectively (though P/1012's original tub was later resuscitated as well!). P/1108, P/1109, P/1112, P/1113, and P/1114 were built into new cars.

Exactly what Rob said. Happens in the Lola and Ferrari world also. It seems history comes from money in some cases.
