Thank you for the responses. I've found lots of spade collectors but none with the thick clear vinyl cover that waterproofs the connection (my middle pic). An internet search indicates several in the UK and I've placed an order there.

Kevin, My ring gear has 121 and that's also what's listed for the Essex. So you may have a different flywheel/clutch. That said, if your starter engages easily and spins the motor up when fresh without any unpleasant gear noises, I'd be surprised if your ring gear was the problem.
