302 Sportsman Block

Is the 302 Sportsman block beefier than the 5.0L roller block? Would the Sportsman block be better for my GT40 that is estimated to make 475 HP?

Thanks

Yes, the sportsman block has more material near the bulkheads and main caps. While a stock block could support this level of power the sportsman block gives you a bit more margin. Another option would be to get a CNC prepared stock block that is deburred and stress relieved. Keith Craft advertises here and offers these for about the same as a new sportsman block.

I would go with a 289 block and avoid the SB100 hassle. But 475hp would be pushing it...

SB100?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

California Senate Bill (SB) 100 allows up to 500 hand built cars to be registered each year based on a) the year the body most represents, or b) the year the engine was made. Since the GT40 body year is 1964-1966, it would be smog exempt forever.

Yes. And as I understand it (and I don't live in California, so am basing it on what others have said), you can still register a kit car the "old way" which bases smog requirements on the year of engine. You still have to get a smog test (every 2 years, I think), whereas once you get an SB100 exemption, you never have to again.

Seems like you build it with a '65 289 (probably still need a closed crankcase/PCV valve for this, no Webers) and register it so you can drive it, then if they allow it, work on getting an SB100 exemption for it at which point you can sell the 289 to Dave Harris and upgrade your engine /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Getting the SB100 registration is not that hard. I did it for my Cobra. Yes, there are several steps and you have to get in line early each year so you don't miss of the 500 allotments. But it's worth it.

I will be at the DMV on January 2nd, 2006 with all my paperwork in hand vying for one of the 500 SPCN's that are given out.

Steve, thanks for the good thoughts (re: 289), but I better have this ^%%$# car registered this year or I'm going to jump off of somthing really, really high!!!

Like Bill, I'll be camped out on the DMV lawn the evening of Jan 1st and try to get one of the magical 500 allotments next year (missed by 1 hour this year).

cheers
