Another stupd transaxle question (Sorry)

Hello,
Another dumb question. Sorry /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Is it possible to use 4WD transaxle in a 2WD application? If so what is required?

Thank You

Anything can be done with money but in this case there isn't a good reason to spend it. The 2WD versions of the audi's are many and cheep. It would cost many times the price of a 2WD audi transaxle to convert a 4WD to a 2WD. Even if you got the 4wheeler for free.

So... NO.

From my memory of a conversation with a very experienced G50 rebuilder they routinely do this on a 4wd 6spd porsche style boxes converted to 2wd. Think it was California Motorsports.

To do this to an Audi box you need to swap the output shaft and the rear casing, so it is a full strip/rebuild. The parts aren't cheap either.

On a 4wd box the output shaft is hollow so the rear output drive shaft can run through the middle of it from the diff.

A cheap method is to weld up the front/rear diff, and fit a cover plate to the back of the box, but it is longer too than a 2wd box, and may not fit in the car very nicely anyway.
