Clearancing the block

I will be getting my block back from the machinist soon and will have to clearance the block.

How hard is this?

What's the best way to do this (tools, etc.)

Thanks

Bill-

Depends on how much, Probabally if a 331 won't need too much. A die grinder will usually do the job. You can pick up low cost 'import' models for about $40 or so and get a porting kit from Summit and you should be all set.

If you are any where near my area I can lend you mine or help you do it. Give me a PM and let me know where your at. It is extreemly important to re-clean the block after the grinding as it gets metal everwhere!

Bill -

No problem, that is who I was going to suggest Harbor Freight for the 'Import' tools, they used to have a makita copy for $20. I have some of these bits and porting kit from Summit, and they seem pretty good quality, some of the Harbor Freight 'bits' are not so good, but might work as throw aways when the job is done. One other place to check for clearance problems is if you are running a girdle on the main caps, I think it can be a problem in the oil pump area and sometimes on the oil pan.

If you need any help please holler.

This was lifted from the web (Ford stroker crank instructions), I think very minimum -

"Mock-up the block and crank with a rod and piston assembly to locate areas that require notches for rod bolt clearance. Grind notches to provide .050" minimum clearance."

Here is an image also of a 347 (Also lifted from the web). The 331 should not be as bad, but is has been a while since I have seen the 331.
