Deal for Fabricators

This place has a ton of these Cold Cut Chop saws on E Bay and it's a deal. These saws are awesome. I've been wanting one but they were in the $600 range last time I looked. I found this on E Bay a couple weeks ago and grabbed one. This thing is so nice. A welcome addition to any shop. This thing cuts like crazy. That obnoxious, noisy, abrasive saw of mine will probably never be used again. Thought I'd pass it along to the group.

I have a small cold saw from Van Sant (Hydro Mech brand) and it turns about 50rpm, a lot slower the the 1500rpm. I am not sure how cold it is but I hate the messy noisy sparking fire causing chop saws too and that has to be a huge improvement. The one I have has liquid for cooling. I was looking at them but at the time not much info. I'm really happy with the Van Sant one, but a bit more costly.

Nice find Chris - Thanks for passing it along... I may well have to find a new home for my Ryobi 14" and pick this one up!

I just looked at the buy it now pricing and it's $249 that is crazy good. One that that I forgot to mention is the large blade, hydro mech has only a 9" and cost a crap load more. I have a dewalt mess maker and have the same problem of unloading it :-)

I just bid 210. bucks or something and won it for 200. I can't tell you nice this saw is. I have a big old Kalamazoo band saw and an Abrasive saw this thing out performs them both. The only thing I'm worried about is when the blade wears out. This thing cuts so fast and when you get done and the saw cut is absolutely cold it's unbelievable. What'll they think of next.

How does a "cold cut" saw work? Is it simply a matter of the carbide-tipped blade versus a traditional abrasive blade? That it actually cuts the metal instead of abrading it away?

I use a similar saw for on-site work, and it will cut structurals, plate , tubing etc. very well. The saw runs at a reduced RPM, and blades hold up well, but generally I find that the saw I have at the shop has much better blade life with coolant running...not too easy with a portable.
The big plus with these saws is the accuracy of the cuts, and the wide variety of materials and shapes one can cut.
I have a stand mounted cold saw that runs coolant and the blade speed is very slow, but the cuts are pretty fast, only problem is cost (About $3,000.00). The big plus with the stand mounted saw is the miter setup. The clamps are always in a straight line, and the complete saw head swivels which gives much better clamping action, and the head has stops at 22.5 and 45 deg. which makes mitering super easy.
I would recommend one of these portables for that price, and also use a good face shield as they can spit out some nasty chips.
Cheers
Phil
