For sale: Bill Wonder's GT40 (103)

Re: For sale: Bill Wonder\'s GT40 (103)

Thats pretty cool. Definatly not a 427 SOHC. If I ever tried a small motor thats something I would like. Don't those make 2 to 3 HP per cubuc inch? A friend, Mike, has one of those in his shop, its not that complete, RWJ

I'm Elliot Grossman from Symbolic Motor Car Company of La Jolla, California.

By peer chance, I just happened to come across this fantastic forum!

It's true that we've purchased GT/103 from Mr. Wonder. Should anyone have any questions regarding this seminal icon of a GT40, please don't hesitate to contact me anytime. Likewise, if anyone on this forum has a serious interest in acquiring GT/103 (or likewise knows of someone who could be similarly interested), I'm Symbolic's official point of contact for all commercial matters concerning GT/103.

Please feel free to phone me anytime on my Mobile No. +1 760 223 9096. Otherwise, simply drop me an email on [email protected]

I look forward to discussing all things GT40 in future posts. We recently had the honor of purchasing and selling GT40 P/1016, the gold MkII which finished on the podium at 1965 Le Mans.

For those of you interested in the 1965 Ford Quad Cam 'Indy' engine, an owners manual of which I have a copy, was produced at the time and includes detailed technical data on all aspects of the engine and ancillaries to enable rebuilds to be carried out.
About 8 years ago I recall meeting a very warm and welcoming gentleman in the St Petersburg area of Florida who is the specialist for this engine. His warehouse was an 'Aladdins Cave' of parts and engines, everything needed for both the NA and turbo versions of the Indy engine. Sitting shrink wrapped on pallets, were new dyno tested engines awaiting their prospective owners.
He mentioned with some affection his friendship with Mr Wonder Sr (and of whom I got the impression is something of a character !!) and how this unique GT40 complete with Ford Quad Cam Indy engine was used for many years with regularity as a street car - some car !!
Am I correct in thinking that years ago one other GT40 was also fitted with this engine ?

Chris,
Any chance of getting a copy of the manual for a reasonable fee?

103 is still for sale. It is advertised in this month's UK Octane magazine.
The latest webpage is here.

Re: For sale: Bill Wonder\'s GT40 (103)

Several years ago I saw a magazine article about a GT-40 owner who put the cammer in his car. His name as I remember was Jim Tsoning (sp?) and I think he was from Indiana. I have a lot of magazines in storage,(I never throw anything away)and I haven't been able to find the article, but chances are I still have it.
According to the article, though Ford never put that motor in a GT40, they appear to have been planning to. Mr Tsoning found that Ford had cast several parts to make the conversion, which he was able to procure for his car. Apparently the Indy motor had a distributor set up with a plug in amplifier, kind of a early electronic ignition. They thought for the street that they'd just use a standard duel point. When they fired it up it just didn't seem to have power, and a good street engine would suck his doors off. So he put the Indy distributer in and the car became King Kong, a real montser, and he was a happy camper!
I don't remember the serial number of the car, only that it was the "Mk 1", and I don't know what happened to it.Maybe another member can elaborate on this, but that's all my dusty memory can add.

Hello Michael

Interesting post.

I'm afraid Jim Toensing's car lost its Indy engine a little while ago. The link below shows 1027 in its restored state complete with original spec 289 motor.

If you do find the article from when it's Indy days it would make an interesting read.

Cheers!
