Well whilst I cannot viably put solar on my house due to weird roof shape and stupidly tall trees all around creating shade (and I want to keep the trees), where i have installed solar on our commercial properties i typically get a 10% to 15% cash return on investment from the surplus electricity exported plus free electricity inside the property. Worthwhile in my opinion.

Ugly though if slapped on a house without much thought!

All I can say is we had solar panels put on our cottage last April. We only had a 3kw invertor and generate around 5kw on a sunny day and no batteries to store excess unfortunately. We sell back any excess to Octopus Energy our provider and last month was the 1st we have had to pay and it was. Bearing in mind we didn't generate any excess for 3 months and although this will be reduced being winter I estimate we will have exported around £600 (currently we have been paid £550) of electricity and paid around £400 for the year. Bearing in mind we are not on mains gas so all our cooking etc is electric that seems pretty good to me, even better if you can get a grant to pay for it. Admittedly we did look into upgrading to a 5kw and batteries but at our age felt it was probably not cost effective.
