Gear Change Gate for Audi 01E

I have an Audi 01E transaxle in my RF1 and the gear change is pretty bad. You have to be very precise as to where you put the lever to get the gear you want and this usually means having to look down to see where the lever is going. This is particularly bad for 3rd and 4th gears of the 6 speeds available. Inevitably this means the change process is unacceptably slow.

I think a proper gate would go somewhere toward addressing the problem and my question to forum members is: has anyone done this? The main problem as I see it is that any gate would have to be quite high - probably higher than the main sill - to provide sufficient movement of the gear lever shaft that individual gear positions can be accommodated by the gate. Where the gear lever shaft exits the secondary sill that the RF has, the total movement in any direction to select all the gears is about 1 1/4 inches.
