GT40 at Goodwood

Did anyone go to the Goodwood revival meeting this w/e. The site of several 40s battling for the Whitson trophy (against Lotus, ferrari 250LM etc) was great. Darren Manning (BAR test driver) did sterling service in the ex Essex wire 40 and was pretty much out on his own for all of the race.

If you didn't go this year put a note in your diary for next

I was there paul, nice to see 1001 trounce the Ferrari opposition, just like the 60's!
I noticed 1001 had large C.V. joints instead of the rubber doughnuts on the drive shafts, also told the yellow Bamford car driven by Willie green broke a doughnut thats why he didn't start.

I was there on Friday for the practice day, and Willie Green had trouble then aswell. He just about made it back to the paddock after the session but the car had to be pushed the rest of the way.

The 40s etc. just about finished their session before a torential downpour.

I thought you wern't going to go again after last year Roy because of all the commercialism and snobs and the many areas set aside for 'guests' but not open to the average punter. What did YOU dress up as Roy??

Too many areas

I was there too! 8 gt40s plus the Lola Gt was a fantastic site, but what interested me was the lap times. Based on these, some of our club replicas would not have been last in the race, and would have surprised more than a few of those who look down their noses at us. Frank

Darren Manning was posting consistent 1:25s and looking super smooth all the way in the Essex Wire car, a fantastic drive.

At 6pm on Saturday Ray Bellm's car was in the paddock with only the engine block and ZF in the back. Induction, heads, rods, crank were all out due to a holed piston in practice.

At 8am on Sunday it was fully rebuilt and ready to do the timing! At that rate some of you could finish those garage projects in a couple of weeks. It then ran like a clock for the full race.

Average lap times were 1:32 for the Ford France car and the Bellm car, rising to 1:36 for the Lynx ex-Yamaha Gulf spec Mark 1, which has had a fortune spent on it.

These times are well within reach of a number of our Club cars and drivers, maybe we should give it a go.

It ws amazing to see the 40s battling with peer machinery, roll on the Le Mans Classic in two weeks!!

Looking in the engine bays after the race Ray Bellm's no. 30 was beautiful. I have some images but they are not on a site to insert them via UBB code (below) - are there other ways?

Presumably the 101 decibel limit (or whatever) doesn't apply to this meeting?

I was even more impressed by the Spitfire and Mustang air display, but even I couldn't build a replica of these in a single garage
