Help - Alternative in UK to Edelbrock roller camshaft.

I want to change my 302 stock camshaft, for a match to my Edelbrock performer rpm heads. The block is the later style with tapped holes in the lifter valley, but has flat hydraulic tappets, which I want to change for a roller setup.
Over the last few months I have been waiting for an Edelbrock 2221 roller camshaft to appear, but on back order and no promise as to when it might appear, I am looking for a UK source who might have one in stock, or a suitable alternative such as a comp cams.
Can anyone suggest where I might get hold of one in UK, or a suitable alternative, and what that alternative might be ?

thanks
Dave

Hi Brian, and thanks so much for your kind offer.
I checked on summit web site, which gives international shipping rates, with DHL and handling , another USD130, not cheap, but maybe if I ordered all the other bits too.
I'll wait to see if I come up with anything here in the UK first though.

regards
Dave

Guys, looking at the specs, I see for the edelbrock and compcams hydraulic roller camshafts;
EDEL 2221 is .050" duration 227/234 Lift 0.52/0.52 Lobe sep 112/107
BY31-246-3 224/230 0.51/0.512 110/110
BY31-246-3 230/236 0.519/0.523 110/110

so I think that either would be a possible alternative. I see that there is a free downloadable program called camquest to select cams / predict horsepower, so I will have a go at that too.

Hi there.

The Comp cams part number you listed i think is suited for flat tappets. You might want to check the XE266H, which has a little less duration and a little more lift but suits the 1600 -5600 rpm range well. Make sure you have 9.5:1 compression to get the best out of them. the higher the Duration level, the more compression you will need to make it work well on the street. Also check the limit of the valve springs fitted.

Summit are great - use them all the time from here in NZ. Best to actually ring them and get the sales rep to take you through all the freight options and costs so you don't get ripped on shipping.

Been down the flat tappet vs roller path myself in my 383 SBC with Edelbrock performer RPM heads, 10.6 c.r.

Started with comp cams XE268H flat tappet - 224/230 @ 50, 110 lobe seperation - worked well 2500-5500 but wiped 2 of them out in 10,000 miles - probably using the wrong oil.

Went to comp cams XE270HR hyd roller - 218/224 @ 50, 110 lobe sep, noticably better performance everywhere, same operating range, smoother idle, no reliability issues.

Hi Robin, thanks, I did call real steel a few weeks back, but they couldnt tell me on the spot what the comp cams equivalent was, but once I fathom it, I may give them another call.

Jason, thanks and well spotted, they are flat tappet cams, I found that out when using the Camquest program, and looked at why the numbers were different.
I will check out the XE266H.
My calculated compression is 9.77, will check lift as I go.

Andrew, thanks, the Summit site is pretty good, and gives a full list of international delivery options with firm prices ranging through cheapest-limited tracking- to fast delivery inc DHL and UPS.
Sorry you had that problem, but it was this kind of risk that convinced me to go roller. I will check out your XE270HR.

I recommend anyone looking at camshaft options to download the compcams Camquest program, gives power/Torque curves, and all the cam data.

regards
Dave
