Importing/getting title/ insurance

Those of you who have built GT40's from a pile of parts or crated kit: 1)How did you import it thru customs? Any problems? 2)How did you get a title? Can you get it titled as a 196X? 3)How is insurance working for those things? How hard and/or expensive is it?

These are the only things I need to know before I order my kit in the future. Thanks in advance.

Paul,

Although my car was shipped as a minus/minus,

I had no trouble with Customs, as I declared

my 40 as a racecar, hence no DOT or EPA.

I titled it as a 1965 GT Coupe, via JWA

and FAV Vin tags with corresponding numbers.

DMV never batted an eye, although they

made me reach my arm through the vent

window to make a hand signal, in case my

turn signals expired. That was interesting

with shoulder harnesses on!

Many insurance companies cover replica cars.

I am sure your agent has access to some sort

of coverage. My policy has unlimited mileage,

full replacement value +, and was $945/yr.

The only restriction, is that I am not

allowed to run errands with my car, ie,

park it , leaving it unattended. As you will

find out, GT40's tend to draw a crowd, and

I guess my agent was worried about collateral

damage from gawkers!

Mark,

You can always take out your windows on

the day you get your car inspected. If a

CJ-5 is road legal without doors, a GT40

should be legal without a window!

Regarding leaving the car unattended, I

thought that was a bit unusual myself, but

the price made it worthwhile. As long as I

have someone keeping an eye on my car, I

can walk away from it, so cars shows are

do-able with my wife along to guard the car

from dirty fingers, watchbands, belt buckles,

and the like.

Yikes, I've never heard of that. I'll be in trouble if they do this to me in Massachusetts because all I have is the little round snap-in vents. Considering that the turn signal switches in mine are made by Lucas (Prince of Darkness), there's a good chance I'll need that vent!

That is the most unusual restriction I've ever heard of. Guess you can't call it a grocery getter.

What about car shows, are they off-limits?
