My RFGT40 swamped at car show !

This passsed week end my wife and I drove the car to a show in Pinetop Az. It's about a 200 mile trip one way. It is through the Salt River canyon and the roads are made for a GT40. Winding and twisting for many miles.
This car handles so good that not once did I feel that it was ready to break loose in a sharp curve. I do have to wonder where that break point is because I really pushed it through some of those sweepers and I got no complaint or noise from the Yokohama's. In third gear this thing turns into a rocket. It actually plasters you to the seat when you stab the throttle to pass on a single lane.
We arrived at the show 3 hours late due to a slow moving parade in town and an accident that we were routed around.
The show is a participates only voting and many had voted already before I arrived. There were 24 classes of cars and 570 cars in attendance. I was still able to aquire sufficent amount of votes to get third place. Then I was called to the podium again as my car was selected for the Mayor's choice trophy. I must say that I was totally overwhelmed by the huge crowds around the GT.
It was non-stop from the time I parked until I left. It really was nice to get all those compliments from the people and the participates.
Going home was just as fun as coming . The road is really a fun drive for a car like this. I had no problems with the car. It has
no rattles or squeeks and very little air leaks at high speed. The best thing about this car is the comfort you have while driving. I tell people that it's like driving in your lazy boy lounger. There is a lot of extra room which is nice for arm placement on long trips. My feet were busy most of the time in the twisties but I never once felt they were in a bad position.
Even though my muffler is open with very little baffling the conversation level at speed was very good. Much better than my cobra. To me a radio would be worthless with this type of muffler. However if you choose to put on a quieter system possibly a radio would be OK.
The air conditioning worked very well. I did have a circuit breaker kick off for some reason but it reset itself and has been fine since.
As I have said before I can't begin to say how happy I am with the outcome of this car. It is much more than I expected. I look forward to many miles of pleasurable driving on and off the track.

Hershal, your description of the "Phase 2" part of owning a GT40 gives the rest of us an extra kick in getting through "Phase 1" - the building. Each phase has its fun & adventures, but Phase 2 is a hell of a carrot !!

Kind Regards,

Peter D.

Hersh,

You've got all of us pumped up now. You just did what I've often imagined doing. That's awesome and thank you for sharing it.

Have (more) fun!

John

Hersh,

Get used to the attention, as it won't let up anytime soon.
I had a similar experience here at a local British Motorcar show. I was just passing by,
whan a man in an orange vest waved me into the parking lot of the local elementary school. I assumed that there was some sort of detour, until I saw the cars around back.
I was waved to what I thought was a typical parking area, only to find out after the fact that I was entered in the show.
The show's organizers were very quick to point out that my 40 and the Cobra next to it
were "only replicas", as we got the attention of the entire crowd, which refused
to leave long enough to look at any of the "original cars". Needless to say, They were pissed when I received 350 first place votes for "Best in Show" after the crowd had been told that I was ineligible for voting
because of my replica status.
The finale is a driving tour through town,
and at that point my car was only about 20
miles from new, so it was as yet unseen by
the local population. Well, you would have
thought that the Space Shuttle had landed on
the main drag, as mouths were agape when I went by. It was hysterical. The show people were fuming!
I'm glad to hear that you were allowed to
compete on an even keel with everyone else.
Congratulations on your third place, even
though you should have received a first!

Way to go Hersh! A true testament to the quality of your work.

I just set my car down on the tires and the neighborhood grapevine went into action. I've had more people come by in the last two days... The Cobra was a magnet, this is going to be a like peanut butter on a dog's tongue.

I keep telling myself that building the car is a major part of the fun (which it is), but still stuggle to keep down the pangs of impatience that rise to the surface from time to time. Stories like these really manage to get the "hurry-ups" going though.

Its always a pleasure to hear when people are enjoying their new GT40s this much. I hope to be joining all of you (in spirit at least) before the end of the year.

You make me really jealous of your tale of open roads and great corners. There are so few of those around here in the South east of UK. They once did a traffic survey on the road past my house. Get this, in a town with a population of 80,000, 30,000 cars a day were going past the end of the road! A new by-pass was built and it dropped to just 15,000 cars, not that I can tell the difference! Carry on enjoying the freedom...

Spoke to Hershal today and he had his RF 40 at another show this last weekend.

Won no less than 4 prizes including the Presidents Prize.

Well done , the car has obviously been well built and you should be very proud.

Best wishes,

Robert
