Plumbing Insulation

Maybe I didn't look hard enough, but is the water pipe tunnel supposed to be insulated? If not, has anyone done it? I'm thinking it could get hot.

Pat,

We do not insulate the tunnel as in fill in the area / volume between the pipes and the aluminium but we do have a layer of insulation under the carpets.

This is sufficient.

I am aware of at least two customers that have injected foam into the cavity and this has worked well for them. An alternative is to wrap the two pipes with an insulation planket material similar to the engine heat shield that we supplied.

Best wishes,

Robert

I have insulated the pipe carrying hot water from the thermostat to radiator but not the return pipe which should not be as hot. I used foam tubing that I bought from plumbers supplies. The spray in aerosol foam wasn't an option for me as it makes a mess if you ever want to get it out.

I used pipe tape insulation. It comes in 2" and larger width rolls. It is about 2 millimeters thick. I wound it around each pipe like a barber pole. It works great. I did leave 3" at each end bare so that the hoses would not have any interferance.

Mark,
If it will help, the stuff looks similar to electric tape but it is much thicker.
They use it mainly for gas pipe protection when it is buried under ground. It makes a good insulation for the water tubes on the GT. I have seen another product that would work well at the hardware store. That is the foam tape with adhesive on one side. You can get it in various thicknesses but I would stay around 1/16th.

Regarding pipe insulation, As a ex refrigeration mechanic I have used a product call Armaflex which is made by a company called Armacell. Their website is www.armacell.com Click on your country, then on products, then air conditioning, or refrigeration. This product is an excellent insulation which comes in a variety of id sizes up to 6 inches with wall thicknesses of 3/8", 1/2" and 3/4". This company is worldwide. An Australian company which specializes in heat insulation of extractors, turbo's and fuel lines using wraps and blankets in vehicles is www.thermotec.com.au I hope this is of some value to you guys.
